Best Premium Module Available for NWN

Why pay $9.99 when the original module is available for free as a download? I struggled a bit with this question before clicking the buy button. After playing for about two hours, I can confidently say that I am really glad that I decided to buy this DLC. I've played the original and right off the bat, it is clear that there are improvements. About 75% of the dialogue is voiced now which adds considerably to the immersion. It is also clear that additional dialogue has been added. The companions feel more fleshed out. There are cosmetic improvements as well such as new portraits and making the most of the new tech improvements that Beamdog have implemented. The sky is beautiful and the colors really pop! Darkness at Daggerford is my favorite of all current DLC expansions including 'Hordes' and "Shadows" from the base edition. Modeled after 'Baldurs Gate', clocking in at 25 hours, this is a really solid adventure that offers the best of what NWN module creation is capable of (including an overland travel map). It's classic D&D in a computer game at its finest without feeling like a massive time commitment. I love the smaller scale of the adventure - it feels like a mini tabletop campaign played over a few weeks. I am very happy to support the developers too because of what happened with Atari screwing them over right before it was completed. Its time that they are paid for their work and to pave the way for future DLC creation for NWN!

A worthy "Premium Module"

This game is a lot of fun and includes many of the elements which made Baldurs Gate II famous - including a stronghold, overworld map, interactive companions, etc. It is probably the best "official" (single player) campaign for Neverwinter Nights.

Probably the best NWN DLC

This truly is an expansion-sized DLC, rivalling either of the official NWN expansions in scope. And I find it better than either of them. It's a perfect combination of great atmosphere, intriguing storyline (that the player character has a reason to pursue), semi-open world and a lot of optional quests. But all that applies to the original, free to download edition. What can one find in the Enhanced Edition version? Many bugfixes, voiceovers for important NPCs and many new perfectly fitting music tracks. All in all, not necessarily must-have improvements, but very welcome nonetheless. And for those who don't know, the (now free) original version was supposedly to be a paid premium module, but the authors were tragically screwed over by Atari. I feel they'd deserve money even if they hadn't improved anything, because this is truly a very good module, however you slice it. How does it compare to other official NWN content? I find it better than the base campaign and also better than SoU + HotU (despite my fondness of HotU). Also, although I like Pirates of the Sword Coast and even more so Wyvern Crown of Cormyr, I have to say Darkness over Daggerford is overall the best of them all. A must-have for all NWN fans.

Great if you like Baldur's Gate 1

If you loved the first Baldur's Gate and can put up with Neverwinter Nights' ugly graphics, you'll really enjoy Darkness Over Daggerford. It's set in the Forgotten Realms on a part of the Sword Coast just north of Baldur's Gate. It's not a direct sequel to the Baldur's Gate games or anything like that, but it has a few references to BG1 and a similar, playful tone. It also has a similar structure, where you gradually unravel the main antagonist's plot in a relatively linear fashion but can also explore farmlands/wilderness areas and complete sidequests in whatever order you want. Much like Baldur's Gate II, you eventually get your own stronghold. There's a pretty good amount of content here if you complete all the sidequests. I only skipped a few sidequests, and I managed to play for about 35 hours before completing the main quest. There were a few things that could be improved. My biggest complaint: not enough companions. There are only two available for the entire game (a fighter and a rogue) plus a third who temporarily joins you for one dungeon near the end of the main quest. While I would've been okay with a party-size limit since the combat was pretty easy, I would've liked to see at least a half-dozen companions to add more player choice and replay value. (Epilogues for the companions during the ending would've been a nice touch, too.) I also would've liked more voice acting during cutscenes. It's hard to take the cutscenes seriously because of how bad NWN models look. Voice acting could've salvaged these scenes, but almost none of them have it. I still think this deserves a five-star rating for what it is, though. This might be the best official NWN module. I'm glad the developers can finally get paid for their hard work—it's a shame how they got screwed over by Atari back in 2006. If you're a fan of NWN or Baldur's Gate, definitely give this a try.

Loved it

Full of quirky characters, nicely written dialogues, a feeling of exploration... what's not to like ? (except a final boss with excessive magic resistance...). I'd say this module is definitely on par with SoU and HotU. I experienced no bugs during my playthough. There were a few quests that were a bit too "random" to my tastes: I document them here to spare other players the pain: - Wobbog's walking stick: in the liche's tomb, pile of garbage. You only get one Search, no matter what. If you fail it, even if you didn't have the quest yet when I did, you can't complete the quest. - Finding Xanda: need a reaaaaly tough spot check on the walls of the hidden tomb in Liam's hold. You need to be really close to the wall forit to trigger. I didn't find any indication as to the exact location, or any warning as to the degree of difficulty of this spot check. There is no other instance where you need to do this, so it feels like pure luck. - Twin Oaks in Brush of Barbs: there are two locations with two big trees; easy to mistake one for the other and be confused. - Evani's fantabuliser: I found no indication as to where the thief might have fled. (Brush of barbs, if memory serves).
