A game about Transylvania made by Transylvanians!
You're Illy Vraja, a teenager at a crossroads in her life who gets invited to Transylvania by her mysterious Great-Aunt, Domnica, only to find out she comes from a long line of witches, and is entitled to enroll in the Transylvanian Institute for Magick!
As a Near-Mage, you are entering a summer preparatory school, hoping to graduate into a full-fledged spell caster. You’ll take classes in different types of Magick and see how you can use your growing powers to affect the lives of those you come across.
We are from Transylvania, Romania ourselves, so we’re doing a deep dive into its rich lore, legends and superstitions, heavily drawing on them in creating Near-Mage’s dark and colorful world.
Travel freely between three main hubs: the real-life town of Sighișoara, the mythical town of Rakus, that lies beyond a Magickal veil and cannot be seen by most, and the Transylvanian Institute for Magick.
Near-Mage will allow for a lot of freedom when approaching the situations you’ll encounter within the Transylvanian Institute for Magick and its surroundings. When it comes to spell-crafting, you can choose what type of classes you’re taking on a whim, or you can look up recipes in a spellbook and strategize your build.
This build variety will in turn lead to different outcomes for some quest lines, affect certain NPCs’ fates, and result in high replayability. Maybe you’ve erased an NPC’s memory on your first play-through. What if you used a different spell on them this time around… or no spell at all?
You’ll be able to play Near-Mage as a point and click, or you can control the character directly. Walk to your objectives, run at full speed, or even fly there!
Make friends or enemies with fellow students, learn to be closer to your Magickal calling, and lift the veil off of ancient mysteries in Near-Mage!

Just to be up front, I baked this game on Kickstarter as well as Stuck in the Attic's first game so I'm well inclined towards them. If that is too muh biased for you, feel free to puruse the internet for other things to read or watch!
I'm about 5 hours into the game now and I'm having fun romping about the mystical town of Rakus. I only know four spells thus far but I'm progressing along playing the young magical detective. If you like point and click games well set in fantasy, you'll be right at home here. The main character is fun. You can play her nice or sassy. The puzzles are fairly linear thus far but enjoyable. The storyline is building well and all the Eastern Europe mythology is a blast; a very interesting world to be in.
The game play is good, the graphics are fun, and the colors are vibrant and eye catching. Some minor glitches, sometimes you have to exit and re enter an area to trigger a dialogue and a couple of times the voice over didn't go although the closed caption did. I've played with both the keyboard and a game controller and it works well. Looking forward to seeing how the game plays out!
Full disclosure, I backed Near Mage on Kickstarter, because I was enthralled with Stuck in Attic's vision, and every time they gave an update, I got very excited seeing the progress, hearing how they are designing things and the challenges they are overcoming.
The game lives up to all my expectations. I love the voice overs each character has, how their mouth movements line up with what they are saying. It really helps with immersion. Plus the way each scene feels real, with all the tiny details added, how different extras do different things at various times, like sweep the streets, it feels like you never see the exact same thing twice, just like in the real world.
I also love how you are free to express yourself and change your appearance whenever you want.
The many different ways you can solve quests depending on what spells you have learnt is great for experimentation, spontaneously coming up with an approach and feeling satisfied to see the devs thought of it and it worked!
I can highly recommend this game if you are a fan of other point and click adventures like good old Sam and Max or Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle etc.
