Few are chosen. Fewer succeed.

You stumble upon a battered old book and find yourself transported to the island of Myst. As you explore the surreal landscape, you quickly learn that something has gone wrong.

Terribly wrong.

An ancient betrayal must be unveiled. Secret books concealed on the island of Myst lead the way to incredible worlds born of a master storyteller’s imagination. Yet one by one, they’re being destroyed through the treachery of his sons.

But which one?

Only your wits and imagination will serve to untangle the web of lies and deceit that shrouds the worlds of Myst.

Myst: Masterpiece Edition, released in 2000, is as close to the original 1993 experience as you can get without a CD-ROM drive. Featuring the original point-and-click gameplay style, but upgraded with 24-bit color, a remastered score, and enhanced sound effects.

Begin your journey through one of the best-selling video games of all time with Myst: Masterpiece Edition.

Adventuresome Frustration

I'm pretty bad at puzzles in games but Myst has always intrigued me. The concept and lore of the series just really fascinates me: the idea of fantastical worlds created like an author writes a book, linked by actual books. Thanks to the kind gift of someone else on GOG, I finally gave Myst a try... ... and I had to resort to a guide just to get past the first puzzle. That's really my only actual complaint with this game: the puzzles are frustratingly difficult and make me wonder how anyone ever figured out this game without help. But, let's be honest, that's a lot of the appeal. Where this game shines, at least in my book (pun intended) is the atmosphere, story and overall feel. This game is pretty short (completed in 4h30m with a guide) but it felt much longer than it was. I felt like I was genuinely exploring the different Ages, trying to unravel the mysterious story behind them. The puzzles, while feeling rather unnatural to the environment, were still fun to do with a guide. They put the sense of adventure in "adventure game" as, even with said guide, I felt like I earned my way to the end of the game. The story is woven in a way that keeps the player guessing the entire way. When I reached the end and was faced with a final choice, I genuinely didn't know which decision to go with. I just chose what made the most sense to me. The story isn't as lore-heavy as future games (or so I hear) but the roots are like hints at what is to come. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the Ages are all very well-made and pretty for their time, feeling realistic and immersive despite their fantastical/alien appearance. Altogether, if you like challenging puzzles, laid back adventure, great environmental storytelling and remarkable atmosphere, this game should be on your list of games to try someday. I'll certainly play through it again someday (from memory without a guide), hopefully with realMyst! PS: I'm running Win7 and I didn't have the issues that one reviewer mentions.

Great puzzle game. I love the style.

I love these type of puzzle exploring games. Only hard and unbearable puzzle was the subway thing in space ship age.. Not even a puzzle, just trial and error for like tons different combinations to find the exit. Thankg God we have access to walkthroughs for that kind of thing. Everything else is great and fun to solve. Puzzle exploring and beautiful images. I miss the old days. Also, It ran with no problems on my windows 10.

Not actually an adventure game.

This is a puzzle game, very simply. You walk from one puzzle to another, and solve all of them until you win the game. If you like hard-core puzzle games, this may well be for you. If you prefer your puzzles with more in the way of logical progression and purpose, or even a story-- an adventure game, say --this is simply not an adventure game. Anyone expecting an adventure is likely to come away sore disappointed. By all means, do buy it for the puzzles and the oddly compelling atmosphere. On a note completely unrelated to the gameplay, the original graphics (640x480) have not aged well, and while Masterpiece Edition is an arguably clever solution-- all the original models have been exported to meshes for your 3D accelerator to render in realtime --this somewhat reduces the final quality. Also, the game operates only in a few, fixed resolutions. This will not take full advantage of your 1280x1024-or-better display. Also, you are probably going to want to find some way to force your video card drivers to produce 4xAA-or-better output, if that's possible. That would significantly sharpen up the graphics, and reduce the jaggies. Radeon owners, if they have cards or drivers that still support ATi's interpolate-more-vertices option (whatever it was called), may also get better results if they can force this option on.

Myst

I was hoping for full screen graphics, but this version runs in a graphics box enviroment and resolution is low. Game works well but lacks the visuals it might have had
