You stumble upon a battered old book and find yourself transported to the island of Myst. As you explore the surreal landscape, you quickly learn that something has gone wrong.
Terribly wrong.
An ancient betrayal must be unveiled. Secret books concealed on the island of Myst lead the way to incredible worlds born of a master storyteller’s imagination. Yet one by one, they’re being destroyed through the treachery of his sons.
But which one?
Only your wits and imagination will serve to untangle the web of lies and deceit that shrouds the worlds of Myst.

Like the more recent reviewers have wrote, this game indeed does work on more modern operating systems. It's a real shame it got bombed by people who did not get it to run on their windows 7 machines, but I can confirm it works on my latest and updated version of Windows 10 64-bit.
Concerning the game; it's incredible. I consider it the best puzzle/adventure game ever made. I also recommend that people check out the making of video on youtube, to see the time and effort that went into making this masterpiece.
No big review - but all the beginning reviews say "Don't work with Windows 7".
It's the year 2019 as of this writing and I just want to state this Myst Masterpiece Edition runs just fine on my Windows 10 Home edition.
I downloaded it and it goes fine without a hiccup.
It's a shame that most of the reviews are judging the version released almost a decade ago, and none of the reviewers have ever gone back. Most of the top reviews saying the GOG copy of Myst isn't compatible with a modern Windows OS are currently wrong! The devs updated their games, but the reviewers haven't updated their reviews (which makes sense, the users did write them almost 10 years ago). Myst is on iOS, Android, and Nintendo 3DS for goodness sake, of course it works for modern Windows! (As of 2019 at least)
As for the game, it's terrific! Heavily recommended. I'd love to list the things I enjoyed about the game, but, if you haven't played it, I really don't want to spoil anything for you. Take the risk and play Myst! And big thanks to Matthewmatosis for introducing the Myst series to me!
My first ever PC game surely deserves my first ever review on GOG...
The year is 1994, summer of '94.
I was 10 years old, growing up in a shaky post communist country. Grew up in a normal hard-working family of 3, but my parents could't afford a PC back then, it cost around 20 minimum wages. So all I did was dreaming, after seeing one at one of my school colleague's home. Who didn't even allow me to play on it (a Windows 3.1 based PC).
And then comes autumn of '94. Start of scool year approaches and here comes this wonderful day when my favourite uncle (a commercial ship engine master) comes back from Singapore. Of all the gifts he brought back for his 3 daughters, my eyes are fixed on one alone: a shiny white PC (would later found out it was a Macintosh Quadra).
As it was the norm back then, it came with lots of software CD's and some games and there it was, this CD with "Myst" written on it.
As soon as I started my first session of Myst, my life changed.
The music, making me think I am in a place far, far away. The fear, of being caught by an escaping Achenar or Sirrus and who knew what they could've done to me. The places I visited, looking so otherworldy. And then Atrus' journals...
I knew right in that moment that I want to be a writer, to tell stories, to make people travel with me, in a story.
Yes, the game was hard for a 10 year old kiddo, with average english skills, given he lived in a non english native country, but it made the finish so much more rewarding.
Yes, the original graphics don't hold up well, if we compare them to modern games.
And yes, by now there are many people knowing about Myst, good or bad memories.
But to some and especially to me, this game is about exiting childhood and entering teenage years, maturing, finding one's goal in life.
And the memories I have, solving puzzle after puzzle, will forever live with me.
Thank you, Cyan. Thank you, Miller brothers.
The ending has not yet been written.
I downloaded this on Windows 7 (which GOG has claimed it to be compatible with), and it freezes every few minutes, making it completely unplayable. I tried the suggestions on the support page, none worked. I tried some suggestions found on other websites, as well as tinkering with the settings myself, and none worked. It is COMPLETELY UNPLAYABLE on my computer. It is the only game I have ever had an issue playing on this computer, too.
