Myst Masterpiece Edition

This game is great -- I used to play it years ago and really enjoyed the challenge of trying to solve the puzzles. I recently wanted to play it again on a newer PC than the original title was created for -- that being a Windows XP machine. Upon first install, I would get an error and the game would shut down (the error that prompts to send/don't sent report). A solution to getting past this error that I found to work -- for the most part -- is the following: I uninstalled my version of QuickTime and installed Myst along with the QuickTime Lite that it prompts you to install once Myst has finished installing. This alone does not fix the error but if you go to your newly installed QuickTime; Start > All Programs > QT Lite > Configuration, head over to the Advanced tab, and under Video select Safe Mode and then relaunch Myst and that should do it. Note however, I ran into some issues once getting to the land of the windmill. I would just reload the game but it seems to crash at times in that area. Save often! I thought I would share in case others were having issue with Windows XP.

This game has numerous bugs. It is a terrible version of Myst so do yourself a favor and buy Real Myst and skip this piece of junk. Here are the bugs I found. 1) Elevator indicator does not work when elevator reaches Library. 2) In roaming mode cannot look down in tower to see all the dates needed for Observatory. 3) Door does not open after entering correct sound sequence from towers in Selenitic Age. 4) Un able to use key to open chest in roaming mode in Stoneship Age. 5) If you use the hints, you have to move the cursor above the hint until it goes dark rather than directly on the hint. This frustrated me for a few minutes until I ACCIDENTALLY found the secret. 6) When you look out opening in tower atop library there is nothing to see except random patterns. There may be more bugs, but the game is so buggy and I could not open door in Selenitic age even after entering correct sound sequence (I checked the help file to be sure I had correct sequence), that I stopped playing and went back to Real Myst. I can't stress enough what a lousy game this is and i would give it zero stars if that option were available. It seems as though they threw this game together and put it on the market without testing it thoroughly.

win7 conpatability my ass

Warning, I thought the other reviewer that said this game wasn't Windows 7 64-bit compatible was probably just terrible at troubleshooting Windows games. I was wrong, and they were right. This game is a nightmare to get running unless you have a 32-bit version of Windows installed. You'll be lucky to get it running at all. I had to buy three different versions of this game to find one that worked without massive troubleshooting. I found that Real Myst Masterpiece Edition runs perfectly. Save yourself the trouble, and buy Real Myst Masterpiece Edition instead.

I tried playing as a kid and never managed to get off the island, but I'm so glad I picked it up as an adult. The puzzles are challenging, but not impossible, and the world captures the imagination. I can't wait to play the second one!
