Mutazione

Not what I would call an rpg; although I've only played it once, it doesn't seem like the choices one can make in dialog (the only choices available in a very linear story) make any difference in the story, nor are there any skill trees or anything. This is a nice, mellow little game that has a sweet and rich story, pretty graphics, and some pleasant (and whimsical) characters. I appreciated the role of gardens, but it was disappointing that there wasn't more choice involved or any mystery about anything in the game. It's possible I missed some subtleties (what is the food from mori good for? are there things you can do with the gardens that i missed?)

The game sells itself as a post-apocalyptic soap-opera. I thought I hated soap operas. This game managed to prove me wrong. If you want to categorize the game itself, it's easiest to think of as an old school point-and-click adventure without the inventory-based puzzles, with only dialogue, and some very light zen gardening elements. Some of you might be turned off by that. But if you are like me you really only play the adventure games for the story anyway - it's basically a like short bit of interactive fiction. If you are like me, I have good news: the writing is really good! Within the constraints of the dialogue the worldbuilding is excellent - it really feels like you're visiting a small harbor village in a much larger world, you start to care for the inhabitants in no time. And then, just like a summer vacation, it's over before you know it and all that is left is a melancholic memory. I hope they'll make a sequel. The setting deserves it. I'm hooked now, I want to know what happens next to the characters of this little soap opera!

I enjoyed this game so so much! It was exactly the type of cozy and relaxing game I needed, while still being interesting. The broader world plot in this story can, at times, be a bit meandering, but it’s made up by the fact that the characters are just so loveable and their stories are also so compelling. Each of them has a distinct voice and is going through a very specific arc in their lives, leaving them all feeling quite fleshed out and nuanced. The dynamics (and drama) between them are super fun and I found myself laughing to myself and nodding in agreement as I was playing. The gardening mechanic was also REALLY lovely. I’m not typically a farming sim/Stardew Valley type of gamer, but I had so much fun collecting seeds and making the most lush gardens. All and all, it was very solid game with absolutely beautiful characters. I recommend you play this game in small doses, it’s meant to be enjoyed gradually :)
