Solid platformer with flaws
Mr. Bree+ has a lot going for it. It has a solid art style and nicely flowing controls. It's held back by a handful of issues though. Firstly, my framerate was really inconsistent, which seems inexcusable for a 2D game in 2013. Secondly, as pleasant as the art is, there can be way too much... fluff. The backgrounds are pleasing, but they can look confusingly like foreground. More than once I thought a path was blocked or thought a platform existed that turned out to be background. - Also, the colors of the level change if you die after a certain number of times. So it's bright and clear at first, then, after a few deaths, everything turns red and contrasty, and then eventually blue, and so on. I'm not sure what the point is. It just make things harder to see. Combined with the bg/foreground confusion, it leads to a lot of unfair trap deaths. - Thirdly, it's rather short. I spent two or three hours with it and got to level 46 of 50 and done maybe a quarter of the optional levels. There are items to collect that unlock the optional levels, so there's some replay value there, but I don't see that taking more than an hour. - All that said, I've had a lot of fun with it. Movement feels really good once you get a feel for it and unlock more abilities. Most of the levels are pleasantly challenging, both to figure out and to execute. I know this review has been mostly negatives, but that's just because they stick out in what's overall a very nice experience. Recommended.
