Solid platformer with flaws

Mr. Bree+ has a lot going for it. It has a solid art style and nicely flowing controls. It's held back by a handful of issues though. Firstly, my framerate was really inconsistent, which seems inexcusable for a 2D game in 2013. Secondly, as pleasant as the art is, there can be way too much... fluff. The backgrounds are pleasing, but they can look confusingly like foreground. More than once I thought a path was blocked or thought a platform existed that turned out to be background. - Also, the colors of the level change if you die after a certain number of times. So it's bright and clear at first, then, after a few deaths, everything turns red and contrasty, and then eventually blue, and so on. I'm not sure what the point is. It just make things harder to see. Combined with the bg/foreground confusion, it leads to a lot of unfair trap deaths. - Thirdly, it's rather short. I spent two or three hours with it and got to level 46 of 50 and done maybe a quarter of the optional levels. There are items to collect that unlock the optional levels, so there's some replay value there, but I don't see that taking more than an hour. - All that said, I've had a lot of fun with it. Movement feels really good once you get a feel for it and unlock more abilities. Most of the levels are pleasantly challenging, both to figure out and to execute. I know this review has been mostly negatives, but that's just because they stick out in what's overall a very nice experience. Recommended.

I give up

Initially, Mr. Bree+ has a slower pace than your average platformer. You even have to unlock the ability to jump. The gameplay is initially inviting in a way that the odd story and main character weren't. I'm not sure exactly what the developer was going for with this title, and while I would've been more than happy to ignore the story for the gameplay, the gameplay quickly began to suffer from the strange direction underpinning the game. The pace, and the number of actions that needed to be performed within a few seconds of each other to get through a level without dying, increased until I ran flat into a situation I couldn't get out of. Mr. Bree+ likes to remind you that you've died. The color changes, and in addition to in-game achievements, it makes repeated failures impossible to ignore. I gave up during a level in which I earned the achievement for dying 100 times. I was pretty sure I hadn't died more than 50 times before that level. I was stuck on a single, exacting point that required me to fit within a specifically sized space and not die in route to it or while I was in it or when I had gotten past it. If you've played a lot of platformers you may have gotten past it easily, but by the time I died for the hundredth time I was sick of it. I was sick of the jarring color changes, the stupid pig I didn't care about, and the gameplay that had become torture. I tried a few more times and quit the level...and earned an achievement for quitting.

This game hates you for playing

Apart from some excellent music, there is simply no joy to be found in this game. Even if you love puzzle platformers, you will be hard pressed to derive pleasure from the casual sadism this game employs against you. The earlier levels are moderately challenging and almost fair, but as things progress you encounter timing puzzles and trap types which seem to exist purely out of hatred for you, and to encourage you to hate the game back. Concealed pit traps are placed exactly where you exit a nasty run of pixel-perfect jumps. Net traps paralyse you until you wiggle free, though they frequently trap you in such a way that the moment you are free another trap kills you. Frequent dying causes the colour palette to change on the level, which can make some traps even less obvious, compounding your struggle. I played up to the boss just from sheer bloodymindedness, and gave up after enough rounds of one-touch-deaths from him made it clear I wasn't meant to finish this game.

Locked to 30fps, otherwise 5 stars.

Visuals of Braid with a difficulty akin to Super Meat Boy. Locked to 30fps unfortunately. Also had some issues with the in-game achievement system - sometimes achievements would unlock, then on following playthroughs would not be unlocked, and would never unlock again. There's an alternate game mode that I haven't been able to unlock and unfortunately I think it's tied to one of the achievements I can no longer get.

Great but short platformer

Mr. Bree is exactly the kind of platformer I like. It starts out rather easy so you can get a hang of the game mechanics and controls. But the difficulty increases almost exponentially , with the two boss fight being close to impossible, mainly because if you die you have to start the whole bossfight over. But then... it is called a bossfight for a reason! When you progress through the levels a simple but effective story unfold, and the levels puzzles stay interesting and original. The only downside of this game is the length. After a few hours you'll have completed it, leaving only hope for a sequel.
