Was bord so reviewing. If you have a strong nostalgia for this game,
when it released on to PS1, then you might like this.
Quirky and Novelty. I thought it was not faithful to the original 2D style of MK at that time.
But that change made it interesting in its own right. Playing scorpian for the first time in 3D, was strange and thats what made it interesting.
I give it 3 stars for the new people who might take issue with the controls, or how things look.
But I would recommend this because you might find it noval and entertaining for $1.45.
It doesn't recognize my controller that tons of other games and emulators will recongnize right away and the keyboard controls are unusable. WASD to move?? No no, mortal kombat decided to be different and decided to use WASZ... why???? And the attack buttons are weirdly spread out over the keyboard, like U and T are two attack buttons, with Y seemingly doing nothing,, who thought that was okay?? I get this game is old but like what the fuck games from 1997 werent required to have stupid keybinds. I also can't find an options menu where I can change the keybinds, I think I'm stuck with these shitty controls.
It has some great characters, it was the first 3D MK, but by god it's not for me.
Whenever I'm winning and performing fatalities I love the game, whenever I'm losing or messing up the inputs of the fatilities I'm hating the game and thanking life that games aren't this way anymore... although with how the monetization is being handled in the latests MK games, I frankly don't think there are that many good alternatives to playing a good -contemporary-, Mortal Kombat game, it boils down to a pick your poison kind of situation.
I didn't grew up with these games, my first MK was Deadly Alliance and from then on I would just play them ocasionally with my dad, so I don't have nostalgia for this game, all I really wanted was -like some reviewers here have said-, a "casual" Mortal Kombat experience; but it's hardly that, even on the easiest difficulty setting the game is ridiculously difficult; which makes you think why even have difficulty settings in the first place...
There's also an option to pull off moves in a "keyboard friendly" mode? But this doesn't really help when in order to perform fatalities you still have to hold "BLK+LP+HK+LK" whilst all being preceded by an obtuse button combination of directional keys; it's a mess.
I don't know if I'm getting older, or maybe I'm just more into stuff from my time, either way... I do like some games made back then, it's just... some have aged better than others; this one -for me-, hasn't aged well at all.
At least there are some upgrades here, from MK 1-3...
- It, at least, recognizes DirectInput & XInput.
- The 4:3 is properly centered.
- At least you can pause this game.
And then the not so good...
- Some buttons didn't map properly.
- When you (or, at least I) alt+tab out, and back in, the screen shrinks to super small - you have to re-select video mode.
- The 2.5d didn't do it, for me, and there seems to be a consensus that this was the worst, core MK game.
This was my first time playing 4, and *shrug*.
