Description

Five hundred years ago, an ancient and well respected Shaolin fighting tournament, held every 50 years, was corrupted by an evil and elderly sorcerer by the name of Shang Tsung. Shang was accompanied by Prince Goro, a warrior of the Shokan race (a four-armed half-human / half-dragon). Knowing that if ten tournaments in a row were won by the Outworld champion, the Earth Realm would be conquered by evil and fall into darkness, Shang entered Goro in the tournament and had him defeat the great Kung Lao. Goro has been reigning supreme as the undefeated fighting champion for five hundred years now. As the last tournament required draws near, Raiden, Thunder God and protector of the Earth Realm, enacts a plan to tip the scales in the humans' favor, Seven fighters step into the arena on Shang Tsung's mysterious island: Shaolin warrior Liu Kang, Special Forces operative Sonya Blade, the mercenary thug Kano, fame-seeking actor Johnny Cage, the ice-wielding Lin Kuei warrior Sub-Zero and his undead adversary Scorpion, and Raiden himself.

WOW! Awesome surprise!

First of all these are the DOS versions, NOT the arcade or GFWL/XBLA versions. That said, the DOS versions of MK1 and 3 are spot on with only a few extremely minor differences. They play virtually identical to the arcades. MK2 is not quite as close... it's still a mostly faithful port, but the music is nowhere near the quality of the other two games here. There is one major downside though, and this is the reason I can only give it four stars... since these are the old DOS versions from the 1990's, an Xbox 360 controller by itself is not gonna cut it. You either need a controller that DOSbox and these games can easily recognize, or you'll need some third party software. If you don't have at least one of these things, you may want to pass on these versions, as getting a 360 controller to work natively on these games is probably not gonna happen. Another thing to note, and I'll leave it to your judgment whether this is a good thing or not, MK1 and 2 do NOT have freeplay enabled by default (MK3 however does). They give you four credits to make it through the game. For those who want freeplay in these versions: - In MK1, press F10 to access the options menu, then, while holding SHIFT, type "DIP" which brings up the DIP switch screen. Switch 5 allows freeplay, and AFAIK, only needs to be toggled once. - MK2 also has a freeplay cheat, but it is much harder to do. As soon as the copyright screen appears when the game boots up, type "AICULEDSSUL" VERY quickly. You'll hear a special sound effect if you did it right (it may take a few tries, as you have to be extremely quick); at this point hit F9 and you'll be taken to a cheat menu where you can enable freeplay. And unfortunately, this has to be re-enabled every time you boot the game up. But yeah. If you can handle the specific circumstances of these ports, they're fantastic once you get them working the way you want.

A few notes for potential buyers

I've been waiting quite some time for these games to pop up on GOG, and now my wish is finally granted. Rejoice! A few notes for potential buyers: 1) As people have already mentioned, these are the original DOS ports. 2) MK1 had two versions. The first was only released on floppy and used synthesized music, which sounded like crap. It also contained a few sound bugs. It was later re-released on CD as part of the Mortal Kombat & Mortal Kombat II compilation (Google it). This version features WAVE audio for music and sound effects, and fixes a lot of the bugs found in the original floppy version. Fortunately, GOG uses the CD version. :D 3) There were also two versions of MKII, though the differences are miniscule. The first version was released on both floppy and CD. Like the floppy version of MK1, it features crappy synthesized music. The second version was part of the MK & MKII compilation mentioned above. It's practically identical to the first version (with the same crappy music), but with a cleaner file structure. It also contains a Fatality glitch that isn't present in the original release. I've also been told the executable is compiled differently so that it plays nicer in Windows (or something like that), but I haven't really looked into that claim. At any rate, GOG uses the first version. These ports were great for their time and are still a joy to play today. The ONLY reason I gave this bundle a 4/5 is because it's lacking additional goodies (manuals, wallpapers, etc.). I really hope that stuff will be added later.

MK 1-3 for DOS does with X-Box 360 pad

These are the games I used to play on my 486 B&W Compaq Concerto touch screen laptop back in 1994. I love the DOS versions of these games. However the reviewer who said the X-Box 360 controllers do not work is wrong. I just played all 3 of these and the X-Box 360 controllers work perfect and are recognized. Just make sure in dosbox configuration file under Joystick it is set to this- joysticktype=auto timed=true autofire=false swap34=false buttonwrap=false Then in MK1 and 2 change it from keyboard to 4 button joystick (gamepad). MK3 will have you configure your X-Box 360 when it starts. Also just a reminder make sure your X-Box 360 controller is either hooked in via USB and working in Windows or you have it hooked to X-Box Wireless Adapter.

Classic titles, mostly faithful ports.

A lifelong Mortal Kombat fan, I owned these very versions of MK1 and MK3 as a kid. Taking a quick play of the games now: Mortal Kombat This was always the best home version of MK1: sound, graphics, intro videos, ending scenes, blood, fatalities. This is a great port of the game! I did however notice that the collision detection seems a bit off, uppercutting a nearby enemy over and over again without connecting isn't something I remember happening when I played back in '93. Mortal Kombat II This one is new for me, as the DOS and Saturn versions were the only ports I never played. It is a good port of the game for graphics and playability, however the music is completely off and seems bright and out of place in an otherwise dark and moody game. Mortal Kombat 3 This was a great port, the graphics and sound are accurate, however there seems to be some kind of speed bug present, I noticed several occasions where the character select screen would lapse much too quickly not allowing time to pick a character. The action also seems a bit faster, though maybe I'm mistaken. Controller support for the games: I did not test controller support, however I've read that it doesn't work well (if at all) in it's current state. Tips: MK 1 and 2 Start the game using F1, options is F10, Ctrl+F9 exits DOSBox. MK3 Enable Smoke and (for 2 player) Shao Khan + Motaro open this file: "dosboxMortalKombat3_single.conf" and add the "1000000 666" as shown below: cls mk3 1000000 666 exit Note: I do remember both MK1 and MK3 including manuals, it would have been nice to have those here on GOG. Overall a fun collection of classic fighting games that are definitely worth owning despite the problems I mentioned.
