Description

As the sun sets on the empires of mankind and civilization crumbles under great storms ravaging the world's surface, the people of Ariath retreat to the underground.

Amidst the chaos of this dying world your father, King Ferodin the Third sent an expedition to the fallen fortress city of Lysandria.

It is said, that within the ruins of the fortress lies the primeval seed - a divine gift that may calm the gods' anger and put an end to the roaring thunder in the sky.

Spearheaded by your own brother, the expedition hoped to retrieve the sacred object but was never heard of again.

Against your father's wish, you decide to travel to Lysandria yourself.

Find your brother and retrieve the divine gift, but beware: The ancient fortress is not as deserted as it seems...

A+ more sterile Ultima Underworld!

Played 8 hours -non-stop- so far and I like what I see! Except maybe the leveling system where you don't know where you are headed with your choices, not sure if you will end up regretting them. Lot of different stats to chose from will have you replay it but its quite a large game so maybe not twice in a row! Be prepared for the map to imprint in your head really slowly as you unlock regions and open bridges between section. It is easy to get lost going one direction their to map the whole game in your head to go from one place to another. It is -REALLY- an open dungeon crawler as well! I played the original Demo unlocking -everything- with the 3 archetypes (no longer a thing in the retail version) and had a blast! Except for the FOV -- which can be changed in the release version. The full game (still early access) is, so far, a fantastic dungeon crawler with a bit of jank in the controls and off visuals -- but you get used to it. Visuals are good but not great -- but again, you get used to the charm! At 4K I am getting a minimum of 60ish FPS all maxed out on a 6900XT. There are not a lot of particle effects and the place feels a bit empty at times. It feels like Ultima Underworld, and like it, enemies do not respawn - However these it way less lore and you feel a bit of emptiness in a game that will take quite some time to complete. Talking about being empty -- there are not a lot of items in these barrels overall -- and it is random so there are items so rare that I got them one moment, died and started over from an earlier save and proceeded to never encounter the item again for the next 4 hours... But if you do everything everywhere you will have too much stuff anyway so balance wise its not bad. Initially I feel like the amount of arrows is not enough in the world - but I figured after playing that adding more points into the corresponding skill would make you use less so it is balanced for that. Overall great game and no regrets buying!

A promising FP-RPG dungeon crawler

When peoples' main complaint with a game is that they want more of it, you know they are onto something. This title is a very impressive achievement, clearly inspired by the adored RPG title Arx Fatalis. A labyrinthine world filled with traps, enemies, and secrets. The game does not do many cutscenes, the worldbuilding and narrative devices are present via dialogue, letters/journal entries, and the world itself. There are clever and entertaining dungeons and sprawling open areas filled with not only enemies but merchants, NPCs, multiple clever (but mostly solvable) puzzles, and quests. Unlike other crawlers, I found Monomyth to be filled with pleasant little surprises around many corners, despite it's EA state. There are about 15 hours of gameplay in EA as of 10/6/2024.

90% Arx Fatalis 8% Thief 2% other

If you thought Arx Fatalis was great but janky and unfinished, this will at least tease you with *less* janky and *more* finished, but it's still not done. If it released in its current state at its current price I'd warn people away. I'm betting that they keep working on it to finish it though. After some more work, this game will finally answer the promise of a true modern Ultima Underworld, or Arx Fatalis 2 if you prefer. There's no question this is Arx Fatalis DNA, but there's also some Thief stuff, like water arrows. The weird dreamlike quality of the world feels a little Japanese/FromSoft. Some reviewers suggest there's no bugs. There's bugs. * The item placement system can break, and items will permanently vanish if you attempt to drop them, which can only be resolved by restarting the application. * Enemy pathfinding is poor. It's common for creatures to get caught on corners doing a Jacob's Ladder twitch forever. Some can't go down stairs. * Ledge grabbing sometimes breaks, esp. from the water, causing an infinite loop of grabbing and falling back down until you try another spot. * Lots more. Some other things that bothered me and might bother you: * I'm pretty sure some locks CANNOT be picked? Which is fine except there's no visual indication of the difference between pickable and non pickable. The difficulty should be labeled. * Enemies seem too tanky. Feels like chopping down a tree. * I found two areas of the game that play non-diegetic music in the ambience channel. I have music turned off for maximum immersion and found this distracting. * Bowmen are stronger than melee foes in melee bc they can stand and shoot you to death faster. * If there's a way to kill slimes in the early game other than tedious cheese strats, I don't see it. * Blunt Weapons is a trap. Do Slashing. Imperfect, needs work, not worth it yet, want to support tho hoping it will get done. Still happy with it but I'm biased bc I'm starved for this kind of game.
