What a giant robot TBS game should be!

MissionForce: CyberStorm is why I love turn-based strategies. It was one of my first, and 23 years later, I still love playing it. The game somehow awkwardly is supposed to fit into the Metaltech universe alongside the Earthsiege games, the Tribes games, and Hunter Hunted, of all things. Despite its awkward lore, the game has a fantastic standalone story, excellent animations, and some of the best TBS gameplay you're going to find. HERC customisation options abound. Different armour, shields, batteries, reactors, life support, legs, sensors... and then you get to the weapons! Energy weapons, missiles, cannons, rail guns, oh my. That tactical side of the game is great, too. Lots of trade-off decisions, like how the weapons will use reactor power if you have it, and battery power if you don't, but movement can only draw from the reactor. The battery takes many turns to fully recharge, too, if you drain it. So the more you move before shooting, the less reactor power you have left for that turn, the more battery your weapons will use that turn. Your HERCs have shields, which are arranged hexagonally. You can shift power in any direction, strengthening that shield, but reducing the strength of its opposite shield. If you do that and an enemy gets behind you... it's all over! If you like turn-based strategy, you owe it to yourself to play this game. It's one of the first, and still one of the best. PS. Never play the sequel, CyberStorm 2. It's very bad.

A great game

I remember staying up all night to play this game as a teen. It has that "one-more-turn" appeal. At $5, this title is a steal.

Never heard of it....

...and managed to surprised me with its deep customization, strategy and brutal lore. Missionforce brings to the table an experience only fruitable to those who have patience and are able to see through its hard exterior. A tactical isometric hex turn-based strategy purely based on robots, set in one of the most cruel universes, typical of the 90' fiction, where every single detail is vital to survive the horrors of mundane warfare. Everything from the base management, which mean robot parts, pilots ( basically genetic engineered slaves) and mission selection, to the battlefield it's left up to your decisions. Only downside ? there is a little (or a lot, depending on your managerial skills and tactis) bit of grinding before taking on important mission, most of the time you won't know how your well prepared group blow up miserably against the enemies and the amount of customization in this game is utterly insane, to the point that could turn you away. But, if you have enjoy a difficult and yet rewarding experience, welp it's time to earn your paycheck by blowing up a lot of metal junk.

Works well on Windows

I'm pleasantly surprised by how well this works on Windows 10. I played it for many years, and eventually, in about the Windows 7 era, it got more and more difficult to get it working. I had never got it working on Windows 10, before the gog.com copy. Also pleasantly surprised to see that the music is intact, although I'm not sure if the opening cinematic made it. Compared to modern turn based games, its a little more clunky. It lacks overwatch systems of any kind, although units sometimes return fire. The hercs are not really balanced, in the sense that once you reach the higher ranks, you never really need hercs like the Demon again. Still, its fun, its engaging, and the feeling of getting a promotion and then unlocking some new technology is fantastic.

Hex based stompy bot goodness

This is classic old school unforgiving turn based strategy. The game actually has a lot of style to it, something of an intergalactic cyberpunk dystopia. You are a new commander in the big evil intergalactic megacorp, and they make it extremely clear that your life is pretty much tolerated at best. Now, the megacorp is out there fighting off the machines that sought to destroy humanity, just so long as doing so proves very profitable. The gameplay is solid, your get a ton of customization options for your battle machines and pilots, the later of which is a disposable asset so don't get attached. A mix of weapons to deal with shields and armor is essential, as is managing your machines energy level. Make sure to balance your shields constantly, and spend your money or you'll be ground to dirt. The graphics, let's be honest. They're bad, the animations are funky. The music? Short little repetitive loops that get old pretty fast. The sounds in mission are serviceable with one exception, the mining ore sound is awful and you have to hear it constantly. The faults are minor and extremely forgivable. The gameplay is engaging and all the standard missions are 15 minutes or less giving it that "Just one more round" appeal that robs you of any chance to sleep. If TBS is your thing, you enjoy having lots to manage and always remember to save constantly then I highly recommend this one.
