You might like it.

I loved this game mostly because of nostalgic purposes. I just wish this game had mods so that it looks better. But either way, It is very fun and luckily I could finish it. I did have some problems though. when playing it the screen turned black during night times and when my party was swimming in the water. I think it was due to some compatibility issues. What I did to fix this is using an old version of DDrawCompat. I used version DDrawCompat v0.1.3. To install it just replace the ddraw.dll file in your game path. https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat/releases

The fan patch is a necessity.

Without the 1.3 patch(availible at www.celestialheavens.com) this game is completely and utterly broken but if you do take the time to obtain said patch and apply it to your game, you will find that it is a very fun game. It is however nowhere near as good as MM8: Day of the destroyer but well worth a spin or 2.

A Bethesda Game Without the Patches

I am really impressed GoG actually bothered to go all the way to Might And Magic IX. It is abhorred by both the fans, the developers and even 3DO, the publishers (who didn't get the instant returns it expected when they pushed to launch the game ASAP). But I guess they kinda HAD to re-launch everything. The result is pretty much what a Bethesda game is without the support offered by day-1 patches and the like (see Fallout 3). A lot of people went through some herculean effort to put the game in a playing state long after there was nothing more to be gained from it and in the end it does show that New World Computing had some bold ideas for this installments. There is an entire host of radical changes to the formula that hadn't changed any since Might and Magic VI and the results could've been what the series needed for a fresh breath of air. Just a heads-up, even with all the unpaid fixes and coding witchcraft used to make the game stagger on its two feet (with a cane and a crutch) it still is terribly fiddly to get it going and it might not work on your computer at all.

IMO Worth playing and member of MM fam.

If you did play just MM6-8, than you may be surprised how much this game is different. If you did play almost all of them, then you will more likely see that this is still valid Might and Magic game, with almost all important elements inside. Only obvious miss is the exploration feel, like when in MM3 you went trough initial maps several times, unlocking new tiles by learning swim/etc., and the whole map was accessible. In MM9 map is now much narrower, with clear borders. But the map designs itself balance this omission to considerable extent, I really loved some maps, the look and feel of them. Another minus point is a bit clumsy UI, with inventory in list form, and not supporting keyboard shortcuts as much, as previous games, also paper dolls in MM6+ were quite nice, this time the inventory is similar to MM3-5. From there on, I think rest of the game is pretty much core Might and Magic... huge exp+levels, open world, where you can go after dungeons where you will be instantly killed, rehash of classes similar to older games... I was a bit annoyed by the story, which is quite naive in the beginning, easily expecting the outcome since the start, but after that expected betrayal climax the game enters the waters of old Nordic(?) mythology, and while it's just the old stories retold in new setting, I really enjoyed that part. Also it's not as short, was I was afraid it will be. So overall the game left me in state of "enjoying it a lot". Definitely not as bad, as some reviews suggest. If those negative reviews were done on unpatched game, then I can understand it, but if somebody expected another MM6, he probably missed the idea of MM games, I think the differences between for example MM3 and MM6 are on similar level, like MM6 vs MM9.

Lacks the old charm

The final might and magic game, lacks the charm and scope of the old games. A smaller world to explore, fewer less crazy monsters and loot. No apparent relation to the old games and a lack of polish. If you want you can reset the dungeons because of the weird save system where each dungeon gets a file, which incidentally can also help you out if the game bugs out. Try 6 or 7 instead.
