I am shocked at the good reviews. This game is not only boring but the combat is dumb. how it has good reviews is amazing for me. Even the franchise for 8 bucks was a waste of money.
I just finished this game and this is what I have to say:
The game has nice graphics. The ambientance is also good. You get inside it (sometimes puts you in some stress moments!), and the story is awesome. The weapons are customizable and has several difficulty settings. Is definitely worth to play it. The ammunition sparing and spreading is very ok if you know how to spare them. The autosave function saves you some headaches btw :P. Another nice feature is that while you're completing episodes, you're able to re-play them from the main menu. I would re-play it.
By the other side, in my opinion, it has it's cons.
Metro 2033 is not open world (this one is a personal opinion). I assume that is not intended to be an open world since is based in a book, and the weapons variety are few. At least you can customize them. The game itself Is short. I finished it in 10 hours, and hoped to keep on playing for 5 more at least. I personally miss some more hordes and monsters to kill, and more accurate autosaves. Also misses the achievements and some extras. Without the extras, the game left me the sensation of a plain story to play.
Bought the game when it was on sale for only $4.99, so it was quite a bargain! I've seen reviews and playthroughs for this game, but never had the chance to actually play it myself until now.
The 4A engine on this looks great compared to the original game, not to say that the original wasn't great looking either. The controls were a little funky to use at first, but I started to get the hang of it after a while. The gameplay, while linear, does have some (and I do mean *some*) open-world elements, especially when you are on levels where you have to go outside. I love the aspects of having to manually charge your flashlight or keeping up with how much air you have for your gas mask- all these little things make for incredible immersion. And for a FPS, its got a great storyline, memorable characters, and your choices can actually affect how the game ends. It's one of the more better video games I've played in my lifetime, but I don't think I can find myself replaying it- there seems to be little re-playable value since its more of a story about Artyom and his struggle than a video game about Artyom exploring his world and surviving in it. Overall, it is a very enjoyable game and I don't regret buying it!
Pros: Great visual, great story, very immersive.
Cons: Controls get a little while to get used to, very linear, little re-playable value (unless you first played the game on a lower difficulty and want to play it in 'Ranger Hardcore Mode'), Russian VA was not as impressive as I thought it would
be.
Final Verdict: play it at least once whilst wearing a ushanka and drinking Vodka.
Played for maybe an hour, then dropped.
In many places it's scripted -- listen to long conversations, then shoot a couple of monsters, rinse, repeat.
In other places it's incredibly tough: the first mission which takes you to Dead City, you have no map, no idea where to go, no idea where you can or cannot jump.. or what to shoot. You, as a player, fine. You, as a person living in that world? No way.
On the plus side: great graphics, really incredible. Good voice acting. Great and scary atmosphere.
Oh if only I were, like, 18 again, how would I enjoy it.
