Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
Metro 2033 and Last Light Redux are great FPS games, but for some reason the Linux ports are not available on GOG. I picked up Last Light Redux for free a few years ago on GOG, and thought to buy 2033 Redux as well rather than buying both games on Steam. But unlike GOG, Steam has the Linux ports as well, and if I knew that before buying 2033 Redux, I wouldn't have bought both Redux games on Steam instead. I doubt this is GOG's fault, but I think it's something worth mentioning for others.
The setting is really cool but the execution is BAD, and it's a shame because while they try to do cool things, the game it's very hard to play without having a detailed walkthrough. As a FallOut fan, I think this game has its own personality and I wanted to enjoy it because it felt new and different (it was originally released shortly after FO3 but doesn't copy it) but I just can't, it's like playing poker blind folded.
It feels as if Metro 2033 was actually released first, Bethesda saw the potential under its flaws and mistakes and used that knowledge to make FallOut 3 a good game -only FO3 was actually released first, although apparently the Metro 2033 designers never played it.
I just can't recommend this game. I think this game would have been better as a simple FallOut 3 clone set in Russia -at least you would get to enjoy the IP.
Unlike FallOut, Metro 2033 is set in mostly linear stages -think Resident Evil.
At least in the beginning, you travel with someone else -they guide you, give exposition, and so on. The game has no minimap, which I can understand as a design decision, but it's very easy to lose sight of the person you're following, and they don't call you or anything, and you can take small detours on your own -so you can easily lose sight of them and wander around looking for them.
The game has both stealth and action elements, mostly unexplained -if I hadn't played games like Metal Gear Solid or FallOut 3 before, I would have been very confused, and even then there were times I was unsure about what to do. Most things in your HUD are unexplained.
The directional sound is garbage -you can be next to someone but if you aren't looking straight at them, you won't hear them. Sometimes you hear everyone at the same time. When you approach a person, if you are close enough you'll see an unlabeled bullet icon (currency). Interact -more unlabeled icons: guns, supplies. Choose one, interact again: you see a list of guns and prices -oh, it's a merchant!
This game was THE game that brought me to GOG FREE-DRM world , and I was not disapointed, game has the story that will hit you so hard that you will think about it for few weeks after you finish a game.Narator is epic and will make you drop a tear or two when he leads you through the game and its EPIC but sometimes sad story.Game is one of the best games that i played and you shouldn't miss on it.
My experience with Metro 2033 Redux has been enjoyable except for the check-point system. Oh my gosh how frustrating it is to not be able to load from a certain point after the monsters freeze in mid air, restricting you from advancing even after you restart the game; glitch. I knew this game used the check-point save before I bought it, I just didn't realize how much I would hate it. Fortunately, after starting a new game and then repeating my progress, the glitch didn't happen again so I was able to advance. Being able to save the game at any given time would have been awesome and would have probably saved me having to start a new game again.
The story line, to me, is really good and the graphics are amazing. Other than the mentioned glitch, gameplay was crazy smooth. I didn't run into any slowdowns with everything maxed out. I loved the music, the sound effects and how I could hear the monsters coming for me before I saw them. Using my mouse was a better option for targeting but I did okay with my Xbox One controller. The game is linear so you're just going from point to point with rest stops along the way to acquire information and buy supplies. I wasn't really crazy about having to buy filters for gas masks which become damaged after several hits, but it's not a major aggravation. Being limited to the number of weapons you can carry is more realistic than being able to carry an arsenal like you can in some games, but is somewhat annoying whenever you have to decide which ones you're going to give up for others.
The reason for the 5 star rating is for the game itself. Yeah, there are some things I didn't like about the game but I feel those are personal issues. I thoroughly enjoyed Metro 2033 Redux and I do not have any purchasing regrets, especially since it was on sale when I bought it. Reviews can be helpful but watching gameplay on YouTube, in my opinion, is the best way to help determine if a game is worth purchasing.
