Metro 2033 Redux

Keeps bloody crashing!

This one is definitely an old school FPS. It's quite tough, totally linear and based only on gunfight and simple environmental puzzles. No sidequests, no factions, no perks, almost no exploration. You literally walk through a tunnel for 12/14 hours, depending on your ability. Sometimes you can take different passages to find ammo, gas mask recharges or stimpack, but the main path is always one, even in the levels on the surface, a pity. I played and finished it, because it has a unique atmosphere and a great setting: the NPC’s are well written and the graphics are still excellent. Dialogues and voice acting are ok, for a FPS. But the general gameplay is too old for today. We have no replayability here. For this reason my advice is to buy it only on discount, because once you have finished it it's very unlikely to play it again

This game was fun to play, it never felt like work. Every bit of the game felt like it was there for a reason and the story provides motivation to compel the player forward. The story is right up there with Mass Effect 1, the charters are cool, but not as fleshed out as in Mass Effect 2. A somewhat short game (which is great for a former young gamer who is now a grown-up without the ability to fully dedicate my life to beating a given game for weeks on end, I beat it in about a week playing 4-5 hours a day. The story was great, kinda seemed strange at first, but the way that it slowly opens up and tells you more about the state of Moscow after a global nuclear war is well done and really draws the gamer in and helps him forget that its a game. And it makes sense, the different factions are an extreme reflection of today's different political groupings. The fear is real, the flash of of muzzles in the dark subway as red beams of laser sights from your squadmates find their target with a satisfying thud in the side of an enemy and you desperately swing around to be sure there's no monster about to jump out of a hole in the wall and tear you to pieces.

This game has not aged well and shooting in this game does not even feel great - it feels like you're shooting from a gun with a silencer on or water gun. An example of an excellent shooter I have recently played would be "Call of Juarez - Gunslinger" and Metro 2033 has not come even an inch close to that game in terms of how an FPS game should be put together. Story wise - I could not honestly care less. Soundtrack was barely even there for me - may be it was. I just did not really notice. And the game is dark - could barely see anything. I highly recommend watching video gameplays of this game before actually buying it. See for yourself if this is something that you would want to play and if the story sounds interesting to you.

Combat, graphics, sound, story - everthing great. I would have finished the game with pleasure and rate it a 5/5, wouldn't it be for those horrendous, way too hard railshooter-levels. I tried it too often and finally gave up because I couldn't finish it. Why can't I just clear a level my own way / with stealth? That's just boring level design and brings absolutely nothing to the game. That's really frustrating, because otherwise that game is a solidt 5/5.
