Metal Wolf Chaos XD

Impressions are based on my first playthrough. A blast from PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era. Action mech game, which feels like an over the top version of Armored Core. But despite its over the top nature and destructive weaponry, game can be pretty challenging at times. Sheer brute force is not always the best solution in this game, you have to think over your customization and how exactly you should beat the mission. Don't get me wrong, most of the time President of this Great United States of America still destroys dozens of soldiers, tanks, mines, helicopters and even other mechs. Fluid controls make whole game loop even better Extremely cheesy storyline is also worth mentioning with its intentionally (probably) bad voice acting, ridiculous one-liners, political and cultural references. Cutscenes are sometimes especially great, they feel like a mix of Metal Gear Rising and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (this game was originally released before both of them, but you get the idea). Soundtrack is also outstanding varying from alternative rock of 2000's to jazz fusion. It has its own bangers. The biggest drawback in terms of the game itself is the mission, where you should beat Warner. I haven't found better way to beat it better than upgrading machine guns for better DPS repeatedly. I've beat earlier missions without any necessity to min/max weapon researches. Unfortunately, there are some technical issues. GOG Galaxy overlay is not showing up in the game at all and it's not convenient to alt tab. According to those who played the original version on Xbox, some sound effects are not played and cut off too early. It's noticeable in cutscenes. But it's still pretty solid action game, which does not take itself seriously at all. Hopefully sales of Metal Wolf Chaos XD will influence From Software to revive old franchises. I respect Soulsbournes like any other guy, but I would love to see games from 6th generation of consoles such as Armored Core, Otogi, Tenchu once again.

The other guys are absolutely right. The intro and menu loaded in okay, but when the actual gameplsy was supposed to start, there's only a black screen. I couldn't even use taskmanager to exit so I had to force the computer off. I tried again for posterity, and this time the game became a windowed white screen that I could at least mercifully exit from. It's been almost 3 years since release and it's the most unplayable game I've come across on GOG. I know the actual game is going to be great but this port is unacceptable, especially at the price (even at the 50% discount I got it at). It has probably been abandoned by this point. I'll keep it in the slim chance they ever fix it, and also as a way to get the overpriced soundtrack, but if you don't care about that, be ready to refund.

I'm sure the game is great. Too bad most of Radeon user can't even play it... I searched some forums, and found out nothing. I would like to play this game, but selling this version with those problems known for years is stealing. Metal Wolf Chaos XD's premise of playing as the United States President in a Mech Suit to save America is probably the best thing about the game. Metal Wolf Chaos is the game that is best known as "the most American game ever made", and that's no hyperbole as it lives up to its reputation! The best way to describe this game is an arcade-styled Armored Core game with the rampant environmental destruction of Otogi and the most over-the-top patriotic B-movie story ever to be penned by the land of the rising sun. Despite its simplicity compared to Armored Core, Metal Wolf Chaos doesn't stray too far from being challenging. The game also encourages exploration to find secret weapons and power-ups. Visually it still shows its age, but it's far from a bad looking game, and the music is pretty good too. Sadly this remaster is not without its problems, and to make matters worse, General Arcade abandoned support for this game after their last patch. Issues still prevalent in this remaster are some game-breaking bugs where one of the bosses can be rendered invincible, the Lock-on Speed stat for Missile Launchers and Multi-Missile Launchers does not display anything, the developers broke the once-functional special effects for the Moonlight Sword bazooka from earlier builds in the v1.03 patch, some visual effects are still missing, sound balancing is still rough, the helicopter rotors in one of the FMVs looks wrong, and the game is still prone to crashes/freezes during long sessions. I have tried reporting these issues to General Arcade via e-mail, but they did nothing about it... There's also an achievement in the GOG version that does not work at all, no matter how many times you meet its conditions and I had to contact GOG Support about this issue. Despite the problems I ran into with this remaster, I'm glad this game finally got the overseas release it deserves with its legendary dialogue and over-the-top action in tact. This was a game I've been yearning to play this game for many years ever since seeing the titular Metal Wolf as a cameo in Enchanted Arms as a secret golem, and the wait was certainly worth it!
