This is a great transisition of Metal Slug's fast paced, run n gun gameplay, to turn based tactics. The way you have to constantly move your units allows for a lot of freedom and fun. Almost all the encounters are based around this mechanic as well, making the whole experience feel natural. The music and spritework is amazing with the characters feeling so bouncy and alive with the soundtrack further elevating that. A massive con at the time of writing is the readability, which can be very bad a certain times. Health bars can obscure information as well as the camera not moving properly and obscuring units and tiles behind the environment. But this is still a great time, my favorite tactics game since Into the Breach. Highly recommended.
based on the beloved Metal Slug, which reminds me (and I imagine many others) of the good old days with arcade machines. The game's gameplay is a bit like that of Into the Breach, but it has been cleverly altered. Additionally, the setting is tidy and detailed. It is my belief that I will devote long hours to this title, as well as my brain cells.
The game is a single-player tactics game deriving from Into the Breach and introducing new mechanics such as sync and dodge points for moving. Campaign has variable length which was one of the ideas introduced in Into the Breach.
On release date (2024-11-06) it is not bug-free and compared to Into the Breach, it is much more resource-hungry because of the usage of Unity engine. User interface does a good job explaining mechanics, but some game objectives and boss attacks are confusing. It is not clear in advance that you can shoot over/through some types of cover. Again in contrast to Into the Breach where I remember all the in-game explanations of mechanics, turn order and objectives were perfectly clear. However, Metal Slug Tactics arguably has more complicated mechanics and more things to explain.
A nice change from the run-and-gun gameplay of the other Metal Slug games in the franchise. It's very challenging even on the lowest difficulty level (recruit). Lots of unlockable weapon mods and skills. Mission victory conditions has enough variance to keep up the interest. You would have to really be very strategic with your tactical decisions (movement, attack) especially on the mid and final boss.
Highly recommended but it may not be for the impatient.
