Great Game, Held Back by the Platform

Undeniably the best way to play the original MGS on PC. I set up a GOG account specifically so I could re-experience this game (and the sequel, unknowing of the fact that it had been removed) and I'm yet to regret it. Port aside, the game's really solid, (pun somewhat intended) even for a game of its age, and this version is the best way to experience it if you don't have a PlayStation console. Without mods, the game runs at a consistent 30fps at a 4:3 ratio with a max resolution of 1024x768, which, while admittedly dated and unsightly, certainly adds to the feeling that you're playing the classic PS1 game, as opposed to a modern-day port. As far as the more negative aspects of the port are concerned, I found the default keyboard controls to be a complete mess, and I would highly recommend putting some time into changing your keybinds in the settings, if you plan on playing through the whole game on a mouse + keyboard. Another issue I have with the port surrounds how it handles MGS's iconic fourth-wall breaks, such as the intended method of finding Meryl's codec frequency, and, more prominently, the iconic psycho mantis scene, which was reduced to a sad shell of what it once was on the PS1. This is, of course, to no fault of the port itself; it's an unavoidable biproduct of the shift to PC that you should really be aware of before you buy this game, or any like it. The game's undoubtedly going to be just as good as it was back then, but it'll be a vastly different experience, due in no small part to the platform. But, if you keep that fact in mind, you'll surely have a great time with this certified classic.

A Less Than Solid Port

MGS1 is a great game; I highly recommend it. However, this is the Digital Dialect port from 2000. While it now functions on modern PCs, it still has all of the same issues that make it by far the worst way to experience this classic. - The audio is awful. It's horrifically compressed, some music doesn't loop properly, some areas play the wrong music, some tracks are entirely missing, skipping cutscenes causes voiceovers/cutscene audio to break, etc. - Missing/broken post-processing effects. - No analog input. - By default, the game uses a font for subtitles that's rendered at a far greater resolution than any other asset, as well as bilinear filtering for textures that clearly weren't designed for it. - Missing content. The port is based on the Japan-exclusive Integral version, yet it's missing the alternate enemy placement in NG+ and some secret Codec frequencies. Certain features I won't spoil that are present in every other version are either absent or made worse. There was a period where this was the most accessible way to play MGS1, but now that the Master Collection version is available, I can't think of any reason to buy this vastly inferior version.

Can't add 5 stars to this masterpiece.

Because the port is not very good. In fact it's the original pc version but working on modern computer and with a few fix like the door bug. However there's a lot of it that is broken. he goes to texture warping , framedrops (against gray fox , and while using stealth camo or just camo from otacon and the four soldier in the elevator). After ocelot boss fight the cutscene with gray fox can end for no reasons. There's a lot glitches exclusive to the PC version like the PSG1 god mode (which is used in speedrunning). Among other Bugged/glitched there's some bug with musics some are not looping correct and someone are just missing anyway. PS1 emulator is way better than this port. Buy it if you want to play this game and don't to use an emulator or a PS1 but he shouldn't be your first choice.

Classic!

Love this port of my favorite video game franchise! I appreciate it's a straight release of the initial PC release. Remakes can be great (like RE 2) but most of the times I still prefer the originals and am sad the original doesn't get a pc release (like RE 2). The graphics, though of the era, are smooth and this remains the most playable games after all this time. MGS1 and MGS2 are superb, bonkers stories you cant help but love.
