Metal Fatigue is a real-time strategy game taking the genre to new heights - literally. Build and customize your massive Combots to dominate the three battlefield levels simultaneously - from orbit, to the surface, and even underground! Develop your base and command your forces carefully - the enemy can appear from any direction, including above and below!

Choose from the warring factions - the Milargo, Neuropa or Rimtech are competing CorpoNations, each with their own technologies and research capabilities. Capitalize on their individual strengths and weaknesses for the optimum strategic advantage!

Customize and build giant Combots from thousands of unique robot part combinations - including such offensive and defensive options as Katana Arms, Power Shield, and Missile Torsos, and much, much more! Add conventional units like the battle-tank and missile car to round out your military might.

Battle throughout three continuous, multilevel areas - in orbit, on the surface, and underground! Build bases, research new weaponry and unit types, and engage the enemy on three different level simultanously.

30 solo play missions - each faction has its own unique ten-mission campaign. Follow the story of three estranged brothers, as they scavenge high technology from the ancient alien Hedoth to fight a war against their very own bloodline.

30 multiplayer maps & missions - up to eight players supported over LAN. Includes both cooperative and death-match modes!

Hard not to give 5 stars (imho!)

At a first glance Metal Fatigue looks bland: I mean, the units you can build are basically the same except from some cosmetic features; even the building are similar if not straight the same! So what's the catch with this game? Metal Fatigue has two key elements that make it unique: the three layered map and the combots. As far as my memory goes, no other game allows you to sneak underground, surface and backstab your enemy, or launch bombers from the orbit to carpet bomb factories on the surface. Or again launch tectonic warheads to cripple underground activities or orbital bombs to strip your enemy of those valuable solar panels. It's not just three separate maps, gameplay flows from one layer to the other seamlessly. When it comes to combots, it's not just the 4 parts combination (legs - torso - left arm - right arm), it's the weapons you choose to counter your enemy: every combot part does (or protects from) energy or kinetic damage and chosing the right parts does make a difference in a combot fight. You manage to destroy your opponent? Bring a hovercraft to take the remaining parts at your base, research them and use them against your foe! Or eject one of your combot's arms to equip that severed enemy arm. You can also use nemesis vehicles to stun enemy combots to deal damage undisturbed, or fire a neutron bomb at them to kill the crew and claim the combot as yours by sending one of your crews to pilot it. There's more: pilot crews can be leveled before the game starts from level 1 (trainee) to 5 (ace): the more the experìence, the more the damage! Level 4 and 5 crews can be identified by cosmetic details (pauldrons for Rimtech, a banner for MilAgro and three horns for Neuropa). So what's gonna be? A rotary blade / sniper with camouflage torso from Neuropa? A dual laser sword Rimtech with hand-to-hand damage upgrade legs? Or a fearsome howitzer torso gattling / hammer from MilAgro? This game provides surprisingly deep gameplay, don't miss it!

A Hidden Gem that Hides its Age

Pretty much everyone who downloaded this has been dying to play it for the past 10 years or more. I had checked GoG for this one within the last year, so needless to say I'm ecstatic to finally find it here! What's fascinating is that despite being from 2000, the game is relatively fluid and easy enough to pick up that you don't feel the weight of its age holding it back. There is no lengthy tutorial--the story mode starts you off in a simple scenario and from the very beginning you will be in combat. It may be slower paced than other RTS games, but with 3 different fields to manage and having over 100 units on the screen at one time, things get chaotic and you will be hustling to keep up. The game is packed with content, including three separate campaigns with plenty of backstory. There is Skirmish mode where you can play against AI in up to 8-player matches. I don't know if the online mode works in this version, but it would be awesome if it did. I have to keep myself honest, though, because the game is not just a wonderful nostalgia trip. Missions can be quite lengthy or tedious at times, taking up to an hour or more. It can be a little clunky with units getting stuck or lost and the mouse movement feels sluggish. Most of your units will simply attack on sight and they do need to be managed properly in combat or they won't get much done. All in all, I'm thrilled to have this game once again and I'm sure it will provide some good entertainment while reliving some good memories.

Unique old-school RTS

PRO - Unique gameplay on three levels (surface, underground, orbit) - Decent Sci-Fi plot - Three distinct factions, each with its own tactics - Fun and effective unit customization - Giant mechas fighting each other with catanas, buzzsaws, grenades and lasguns - Excellent soundtrack, different for all three factions CONTRA - Soundtrack needs some tinkering to play correct on modern systems (and still not 100% correct) SUMMARY - A must-have for fans of mecha games, futuristic RTSs and RTSs as a whole
