I love this game with all my heart! I bought a license for a CD in 2010, then on Steam (2014), then on GOG (today)! I think this is the best WWII strategy game ever. This is my favorite game in the series (2 in the series - MOW Red Tide. In my review, 4 stars from me). I like in the games of Men of War that developers implement many historical battles. In this game we have 24 interesting missions. 9 missions for the Red Army, 5 missions in the hot desert for the army of Rommel, 5 missions in the hot desert for the Allies and 5 bonus missions. I spent 36 hours to complete this game. I think you can do it faster if you don’t spare every soldier like me. I really liked the fact that in this series of games there are a few mistakes (you understand me if you played in parts like Vietnam and Condemned Heroes). I recommend this game! 5 stars from me!
This is the first game in the series I have tried and I rate it with 5 out of 5 stars.
Things I like:
- slow paced (there is micro management, but you don't have to frantically scroll across the map)
- you can point & click or directly control units
- a lot of details when you zoom in
- some buildings can be destroyed
- (with a lot of saving) I can actually manage to finish missions on easy, hooray!
- Impact effect of artillery on tanks feels good.
- A lot of content (missions, different units)
The voice acting does not sound professional, but I do not mind.
About multiplayer: I usually do not like multiplayer, so I have not tested this feature.
I feel guilty for only paying 5 euro for such a big and detailed game. :)
Flaws such as the M36 Jackson's armour stats, if I recall right it had it's thick 127mm front turret armour applied to the rear turret while the front turret was left with 0mm! I did fix this myself by digging into the games unit spec files and editing them. So hey, no biggie, and you can give your tiny Tetrarch 500mm armour!
A more major bug is the enemy (and AI controlled ally) unit infinite ammo bug. Ammo counts are not deducted from their inventories when they reload weapons. This bug has been around since the early days of Soldiers : HoWW2 and AFAIK still applies to the latest MoW:AS2 and MoW:Origins revamp on Steam. What are 1C Company doing? They've had a decade to fix this! They'll soon beat the "blue runways cause a 'splash' crash bug" that Microsoft Flight Sim had from the 1980's through to the 2000's across all platforms, because MFS's simplistic system associated blue with water. LOL! But I drone on.... oh the GEM Editor is not very good. Unintuitive, difficult to use, buggy, bad UI, constant CTD's - surely 1C Company did NOT use this to make the game (did they?). I like dabbling with editing but using this GEM was just too frustrating for me.
The graphics are great on good PCs that can take full details levels, but even potatoes can still run it OK on reasonable detail! I love it's destructable scenery features. SFX and music all work well, this is one of the few games I don't resort to "music off" with!
An earlier review by Boogoose said it all when he said "Hard but fair". That is spot on. The scenarios are tough..... and will need plenty of saves/reloads/try something else. But it's never impossible or grossly unfair like so many other (often Russian) games. Blitzkreig 2 I'm looking at you! You wont need cheats. Just use brain and you'll truimph in the end, and fell very satisfied in doing so.
One of the few titles I own both here on GOG and over on Steam..... which is praise indeed!
You may not like it. I don't. I find the game mechanics too cumbersome generally and too exacting at times. But I think it is a great game. As others have explained in detail, the level of interactivity is like no other RTS game I have seen. Were you ever frustrated by the inability to drop weapons from a squad in COH? In MOW, you can unload the ammo from one soldier's gun (and drop the gun like in a role-playing game). Most FPS don't even allow that. Still, having to worry about ammo and fuel when I control several dozen soldiers and a dozen tanks is too cumbersome for me.
It is not because the AI is so bad I have to micromanage everything. Here is my favorite example. The vehicles in this game can be damaged (damaged tread means you can't move, damaged barrel means you can't shoot, etc.) They can be repaired by a soldier using a repair kit. The static guns, say the 8.8 cm Flak, do not come with a repair kit. The first time one of my 88 got damaged, I clicked on the auto repair button to see what would happen. For a tank, a crew member would jump out, get the repair kit from the tank, and proceed to repair the damage. For the 88, one gun crew jumped out, walked over to a tank that was close by, picked up the repair kit from it, walked back and proceeded to repair the gun. I wish he knew to put the repair kit back when he was done, but you get the point. The AI is not consistently good, infantry doesn't always know to use their anti tank grenades even when the tank is next to them, for example, but the game has its moments.
MOW is like War and Peace. Even if you are an avid RTS gamer, it may not be for you, as it is not for me, but you owe it to yourself to expose yourself to it. Just to know what is possible and that it is out there. Even if you only play a little bit, at only a few bucks now (and sometimes on sale), MOW is worth buying. And saving, since we are talking about GOG.
One of the few reviews I have ever done. Bought it for $1.40, and what can I say the pyhsics are great better than even $60 or $80 games, the vehicles blow up convincingly and different every time like they are fully mathematically rendered. They nailed WW2 and the enviroment . Tough as shit though, some missions your given a handful of soldiers to take on dozens of german tanks and countless Nazi soldiers.
