Medal of Honor: Allied Assault War Chest

I used to love this game as a kid and tried replaying it recently, expecting the same thrilling action I remembered. Well, I guess some things should stay in the past and this game might be one of them. The core of the game is still very good, with memorable missions that take you all over the western front of WW2. The first mission in Africa and the Omaha beach landing are especially great and still hold up quite well. Gun feel is also pretty satisfying, with superb sound effects for the time and a nice kick. The problem, however, is that the combat is extremely janky and unfair. Enemies can see you as soon and you advance the fog of war, so pretty much the same time you have any chance of noticing them, and they immediately start sniping you with pinpoint accuracy. It doesn't matter what weapon they have, they can get you from 60m even with an smg or a pistol, all while running erraticaly and barely aiming. Hell, they can still shoot you during their wounded animations where the weapon is obviously aimed in a completely different direction. Unlike the player, they also have extra abilities like going prone or melee attacks with all guns. Several levels have forced alarm that keeps infinitely respawning enemies in random spots, often in locations you've already cleared or even right in front of you if you're quick enough. The respawns are so fast that you can't even reload your gun before another wave. How about turning the alarm off? Oops, no, because the devs decided someone will always trigger it after 20s even if no one sees you, so the entire mechanic is useless. Add to that a completely broken stealth system where enemies can see/hear you killing someone with a silenced pistol through several walls and you've got a very frustrating experience. All in all, MoH:AA is a shooter with some excellent moments and atmosphere, but it needs very thick nostalgia glasses to overlook its jank, even compared to its contemporaries like CoD 1+2 or XIII.

Amazing game. Everything works great, you will really thin that you are in the second great war. Fun from begining to the end, never get repetitive. The bad thing is that there could be more difficult settings since NORMAL is ok but Hard is Too Hard

I recently completed the trilogy, on recommendation of an acquaintance. Well for starters the games seem to have aged badly. I couldn't get a clear line of sight on my IPS monitor due to some wierd contrast issues. Both expansion packs exhibited instabilities, though infrequent, but enough to ruin immersion. However, I have a major bone to pick with level design. Somehow the expansion packs feature many heavily scripted levels explicitly designed to force reloading. The main game (allied assault) is comparatively okay. I have accordingly rated the package as 2, a rating of 4 for the main game and 1 each for expansion packs.
