MDK 2

A classic from the 90s and honestly one of the more inventive. Granted it's not quite as good as the original MDK in many way but it's still good. Bit more cheesy and the diverse characters give it some flexibility but it's not quite as serious as the original.

In theory, I'm sorta on board with changes in direction. Yeah, I would prefer to up the abstract and absurd from the original rather than scaling it down. But the devs clearly aimed for a more conventional story and progression structures, and significant amounts of goofiness were retained. And the idea of new playable characters and their personalities' tweaking is appealing. Visuals are solid, and soundtrack is godlike (though not always utilised in a best way). However, there are just too many bad game design decisions. The new characters are the worst offenders here, with flat-out boring stretches (either with mundane busywork puzzles, or with uninspiring tanky shooting sections) that seem to last forever and are sometimes prone to sequence breaking, which will likely get the player stuck after some time and force to reload. On top of that, the original Kurt sections offer largely unchanged controls, but without the frenetic pacing they were suited for, making many challenges awkward to overcome, and dilluting the fun moments even further. The game never quite sunks into the outright bad, imo. But it lost what made the original so good, and what it offers instead is often subpar.

You play Kurt as you played Kurt before, boss fights are lovely and some rooms are splendid. Max and Hawkins were supposed to add diversity but their levels respectively get monotonous and annoying : you fight the same way you fight with Kurt (so so) ; the game fails hard when it tries to be a platformer ; the Dr's puzzles are far from clever or even funny. Also, I like the personality and humor of MDK better but I won't blame Bioware for not being Shiny. And about the soundtrack : i can't help but praise the lard.

All the strange gameplay decisions from the first one are in this one, for example: Shooting into holes to hit enemies, and looking for things to open doors, and these things are "spheres" that are kind of hidden in the stage. No, this is not Run and Gun at all! This is just a game with tons of platforming, some puzzles and shooting elements with few enemies in the stage, just like the first one. Technically speaking, it ran well on a true full screen, unlike the first one. And I didn't experience any crashes, the game runs smoothly in OpenGL at 60 frames, and the controls are good, remappable and functional; only these things are good in this game, unfortunately. Well, that was my experience and what I saw, try it if you want or not. I recommend trying X-COM - Enforcer if you're looking for a true good run and gun, by the way, it's almost always on GOG with a good discount.
