Simple for a 4X, but very Replayable

Gameplay is decently broad and deep for an early 4X. Being able to magically "change the rules" on the fly adds a lot of options for replayability. You can play a low-magic warlord like normal, or rely on summoned creatures, or throw fire and lightning to slay armies, or alter the overland to raise your empire's wealth while eroding others. It is missing modern elements like spying, religion, cultural pressure. It's mostly either conquer the world, or cast the one grand spell that banishes all your opponents. The war of conquest happens on two planes of existance at once, and there are spells to hop between the two.

Every bit as good as I remember it

This game was a nostalgic one for me, as I played it heavily when it came out. I am happy to report, it is every bit as good as I remember it, and then some. I have always enjoyed the mix of Civilization-style play on the main map and tactical, turn-based combat that allows you to triumph through solid application of unit composition, tactical acumen, and spell use.

Best game of all time

Seriously. I know it's dated. I know a couple of the races are broken. I know the graphics are 8-bit VGA or whatever. None of that chances the fact that this is honestly the best game ever made, and any strategy fan owes it to himself or herself to play this one. Over and over and over and over and over. A good strategy game ins't complicated. A good strategy game is involving and well-crafted. This is both. You cannot go wrong with Master of Magic. Period.

This is the one that started it all!

I first played this when my buddy brought it home from college and showed me it. After that I was hooked and thus began my journey into the world of PC games. Sure the original floppy version was buggy as heck but by the time I got it on cd they had managed to patch most of the bugs (though some of the nastier ones still crop up from time to time). Overall, give this a try if your into this type of game you won't be sorry you did.
