Before Civ, there was MoM
Even though the two series coexisted, I only started playing Civ a few years after discovering MoM and I have never found a game so perfectly suited to my personal tastes since this one. The closest would be the HoMM series, but it still cannot take the crown.

Living back in my childhood
I have very fond memories of this game back from the days of when PC gaming was just begining. This is a timeless classic that will never go away and I spent many months lost in time trying to become the Master of Magic

Old Style Good Civ Clone
If you are a fan of Civ any version get this game. This is a fantasy setting civ with different races instead of different countries. so instead of russia versus england, it is elfs versus lizardman. The map looks exactly like the very first civ version including the units and settlers. Instead of researching tech you research magic wich helps you with different aspects of the game. Unlike civ this game has a very tactical aspect as well. Once combat starts between stacks of units. It drops down to the field of battle and you get to control your units. Very well done.

Like old wine
Master of Magic is the deepest, longest lasting and most challenging 4X game made. At the risk of sounding heretic I also believe it is the best 4X game ever made. Yes it is better than Civilization. MoM rocks the familiar formula with a touch of magic, creating a tasteful dissonance between structured economic advance and unbridled chaos. This is exactly what the 4X genre needed to reach perfection. Unfortunately the graphics are very ugly, even by the standards at the time it was released. But beneath the torn wrapping is a gift of beauty. I still hope for a remake with better graphics. Until then I will play this game over and over again. To the portal my minions.
