So close but...

As others commented, its a mostly faithful remake of the original game... "mostly". The hex map is really nice. The combats and 3D units look amazing (arrows actually arcing throught he sky; dead figures staying where they died while the rest of the unit walks away and continues fighting). But there are several things I just can't get past: * The UI scales with whatever resolution you put the game in. So if a menu takes up 20% of the screen, it'll take up 20% of the screen no matter if you're running in 800x600 or 2560x1440. I cannot play in 4K res because the menus get so gigantic I need to sit 6 ft away from the screen to not get a headache so its just a complete waste of screen size. If you want an example of a game that works brilliantly in 4K resolution, look at Total Annihilation, which is amazing considering it came out in 1997, before 4K resolutions existed. A menu that is 100 pixels across should be 100 pixels across no matter what your resolution is. * All unrest modifies being % based. This completely changes the dynamic of the game, and early game strategies that worked in the original now don't (park your swordman+spearman in starting city, crank tax rate up to 2 gold/person, get no rest until city becomes size 5, then reduce it to 1.5 gold/person). Instead of unrest being easy to quell in small cities and getting more of a problem in large cities, its now the opposite. * Related to above, the fact that you start with a Swordsman+Settler instead of Swordsman+Spearmen, and settling a city produces a free Swordsman out of thin air. Again this seems like a trivial change, but completely invalidates early game strategies we are used to. All in all its really unclear who they were catering to. If fans of the original game, some of us are annoyed by some of the rule changes. If new fans who never played the original game, they are annoyed by lack of features that were introduced in other 4X games in the 25 years since the original game came out.

Same as original, needs more features.

Its very much the same as the original just with SOME added QOL improvements but not much. Seems the focus was more on graphics. The art is great for everything but not so much for the units. Im gonna ignore the bugs because its new and they have an in game system for reporting. Its very difficult to see everything. The campaign map is a hot mess. The minimap is terrible. Battle screen is also a mess very difficult to see whats going on. Everything is too 40k looking and it just doesnt work imo. Overmap animations too slow. Battle speed fine though. Clunky and slow ui. No improvement to cast system. Ideally instead of cast a buff for one unit at a time instead select how many casts you want them cast them on units in a stack at ONCE. Need option for even smaller maps the very small map is still way bigger than the original. Its just too much for whats labeled as a very small map. Need more options in the option menu for ui and animation control. Newly made units should be snapped to not ignored. Disable battle snap camera option. Myrran map too dark, even out of fog of war. Ring around cities is annoying and ugly (like me). I dont want to give the impression its a bad game, if you liked the original then you have to have this and you'll easily fall right into it because its almost exactly the same. Thats fine but it needs far more options and QOL improvements, it has some mind you but needs much more. It doesnt seem to be a lot more balanced which is good but not enough was improved aside from the graphics, and the graphics wasnt really a downside in the original it was the barebones control of the game.

Well...

I loved the original Master of Magic and am still playing it with DoxBox When this remake came out, I was thrilled as the developer claimed that it will be a faithful remake of the original. Overall, yes.... it is a faithful remake. But.... feels lacking in various parts though they are just small details for most people. Lacking of animation for spell research completed and replacing the wizard's with just a picture frame, building completed, no glowing aura corresponding to the wizard's banner when melding magic nodes, units have no glowing aura when enchantments are cast on them, magic artifacts have no glowing aura (just select images how it looks). I know it's just small details, but these are the things I love from the original game. Also the old soundtrack was lovely, it would be nice if the developer could add and improve them. Overall it's a good remake of the original game

Disappointing

I've been looking forward to this release for over a year. I was expecting the fun and ease of playability that the original game plus Caster of Magic's improvements. I was hoping for just better graphics and maybe some new spells/units/magicians - something. Instead it is the same original game with different graphics and poorer game controls/interface. Overall, the game was given a hex map in place of squares. The game graphics were updated. The game controls were changed to the detriment of gameplay - I actually only played for about 20 minutes before giving up on this game. Caster of Magic is a great game; I'll play CoM over this version unless there is a major update. Please get Seravy involved with directing the game. The game controls were altered. - There is no mouse pointer scrolling for the map. The game uses arrow keys or WASD keys to move the map view. - The hotkeys were changed. Enter is used to end turn (which is on the same side of the keyboard as my mouse hand); next turn or spacebar would be preferable (like the original game). - You have to manually go from one unit to the next by pressing the spacebar. The original game automatically moved to the next unit when a unit was out of moves - the original control is far far preferable. - The town and map interface are not as clear/easy to use as the original. I'll take MoM/CoM graphics any day over this thing. Very sad.

Disappointing

Some thoughts from about 30 hours of gameplay: Negative/Cons: - Unhelpful interface. - AI cheats like mad. Okay, all 4X Civ clone AIs cheat, but I don't think this one is playing the same game as me. - The AI turn can get very slow. - The AI strategy for some wizards includes *large scale* city spamming. - The Myrran plane is brown everything. It's hard to identify the features. - I may have missed something, but I couldn't get any extra spell books. I loved hunting for those in MoM. The designers seem to have something against making your wizard a generalist as a strategy.- Modern MoM clones may allow you interesting features like casting a few spells while you have nothing else to do and stockpiling them for use later. Nothing like that is in this game. - I was surprised when an AI wizard started 'summoning' non-magical units in the middle of a battle. I don't ever recall that in a MoM clone and I don't think the particular AI wizard shouldn't have had that type of spell available. Perhaps I really missed something and you can do it, too. Positive/Pros: + by this time (Feb 24), seems to be generally bug free. + Combat outcomes generally seemed reasonable. One minor weird point is that you know if a unit is killed before the animation of an attack finishes, because no damage bubble pops up if they die. + The game is fairly true to original the MoM,
