Unique setting you'll find only in Mafia

Like Assassin's Creed games, Mafia games should be rated for its setting and atmosphere that recreates passed years of Americas - which is the only one in such scale - this means this game is the only one on GOG you can get if you like to immerse in 1930s Americas and especially New York of that time. Second to rate it for is the story, and it's outstanding one, not like fairy tales with true happy ending, rather, i'd say it's a canonical one for the Mafia as it always was. This is the game which is rare, and there won't be much with this kind of themes and settings specifically in the given scale. It's better to play it during the holiday season.

Played the original physical copy but..?

I found Mafia 1 on GOG, wow. I felt like I should write a review since I played this forever ago on PC. This game changed my life and gave me experiences that no other videogame has ever given me. This game is difficult, cruel and unfair even. But once you figure out how to win by using some really amazing strategy guides you can really feel what sets this game apart from every other game on earth. Then I read the reviews stating that all the music that made the game special had been cut out. Then I read the part of the mafia game page here that says "Note: This re-release of Mafia has an edited soundtrack and does not include any licensed music." What...? WHAT? YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT THE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC THAT SET THE ATMOSPHERE AND MOOD OF THE BEST GAME ON EARTH WAS REMOVED? BY ALL THAT IS HOLY! FOR WHAT PURPOSE!? That HURT. OUCH. serious pain in my heart right now. I almost ALMOST purchased this again since I have no idea where my old physical copies of the game are. I. Can. Not. Believe. Mafia. Was. Gutted. The music was an essential part of what made mafia special. Every part of Mafia made Mafia special. I can not grasp the gravity of this situation. It's so wrong, Just So So Wrong. Mafia deserves 100 Stars out of 5, but this-THIS is very sadly and very unfortunately Not Mafia. This is a hollow soulless shell of a formerly beautiful masterpiece that stood as a lone example and high standard that should have been- but was sadly never followed by other developers. This special wonderful AMAZING EXCELLENT game that has more right to be called a game than many many other "games" out there, to me in my personal opinion, has NEVER been matched in terms of quality and the amount of love and care and work put into it by any other video game in the known history of humanity. To take such a shining example of what should be striven for when creating a video game and stripping it of it's music- its very voice... It is a travesty of the highest degree. I can't purchase this.

It's difficult

Believe when they say that it's difficult. It is. This port on GoG is quite buggy as well since there are some stuff I don't remember happening. At leat not as often. Basically I played the game first time over 15 years ago when it was on CD's. I remember trying to win a race, which in itself is quite random in an open world GTA style maffia game. It took me whole night to finally win that. Now, you have difficulty settings for the race, which is a shame. But what's great is that the rest of the game doesn't. So you still feel accomplished once you successfully finish a mission after several to several dozen restarts. This is what I love about this game, besides decent story, that there's no hand-holding. You experience the brutal and violent life of a mobster first hand. You're not a god but simple mortal just trying to survive. If GTA is for children then Maffia is for more mature audience.

An old gem

I first played this game when I was 14 I think. I'm currently learning French so I wanted to play old games in French and I picked Mafia. Overall I think the gameplay aged very well even though driving especially in the early chapters sometimes feels like a chore. Due to licensing issues all the licensed music is removed in this version but that's easily fixable (google "mafia music fix"). Definitely do that as this game features the best gypsy jazz songs ever composed and they just fit right in the atmosphere. You should buy and play this game if either you haven't played it or played it several years ago as the game doesn't really have that much replayability value. The current discount seems ridiculous though - Mafia 2 went from $40 to $8 while Mafia went from $15 to $10. Oh, and, playing this game is a terrible way to learn French. The voice acting in French is terrible and the translation is either very outdated or downright wrong.

Masterpiece

It is already some time I played this game, but it was one of the most exciting PC experience I had. The story is nice, I would say very typical for that part of the history. Whatsmoreover, the music is also very atmospherical and makes a perfect supplement to the story and the game itself.
