I've lost my nostalgia goggles
I had this game back in 2002 when it first came out. While I can't recall the specific details of what happened in the story and whatnot, I do remember enjoying the game immensely, with it's 1930's setting, atmosphere and music. Had I written a review for the game back then, undoubtedly I'd have given it five stars without hesitation. Sadly, Mafia hasn't aged well and I just couldn't get into this GOG release of the game. Possibly the cause of that is my familiarity with the gameplay and controls for more recent releases, such as the Mafia II and Mafia III sequels for example. I played both those using an XBOX controller, but while you can rebind keys to use a controller instead, the experience is generally not very good. Likewise, and compared to the sequels, finding your way around the city is very cumbersome in Mafia. Using the tab key to bring up the city map is fine, but when your vehicle is still on the move and to avoid crashing, it means stopping every time to find out where you're going. The compass and mini-map are also pretty useless too. As others have mentioned, one of the things I distinctly remember about the original, which greatly added to the overall atmosphere, was the music of the era playing while driving around. Although I appreciate that the rights might no longer have been available for use in this re-released version, it does detract from the overall atmosphere I enjoyed when playing the game back in 2002, making it feel rather bland instead. Those are pretty much the key reasons why after a few frustrating missions, I ended up skipping this and went straight onto Mafia II, which I really enjoyed and by comparison, was much better overall to play.

Worth replaying
Thanks for all the funs it gave me! Great story with cinematic cutscenes, compact and stimulate storyline, wonderful experience of shooting and driving, and various 30's style musics, all these combine into a true masterpiece! Since I bought it in 2002, I will played through it 1 or 2 times in every year.
