fun except controlls are ELwhako Diablo!

the character and story are great but the controlls are, quite frankly in need of overhaul. espeically driving which is abysmal without a steering/brake/cluctch sim wheel which nobody can afford who plays these games. other than odd controls and "mexican mafia" style car shooting combat(which could be made to work with the right configuration but is not-even with key remapping) this game is pretty good. just be certain you read the map on a printed hard copy and get a steering wheel. WASD is in the Abyss! GTA controls wouild be better, as in Part 2!

A bit old but still good

Decent story. Outdated graphics, but interesting and challenging gameplay. It's a shame that the music was cut out, but it can be restored.

GTA3 done... differently

NOTE: this is a review of the game itself, not the GOG release. Basically, GTA3: Mobster Edition with an extremely heavy emphasis on story (which is good but, or maybe because, it is ripped off almost wholesale from a certain well-known film) and fewer penis jokes. The gameplay is fairly standard early 2000s TPS fare, meaning no health regen and no snapping to walls. The driving deserves more attention as it is decidedly less arcadey than GTA's (even today), even including (optional) manual transmission (!) and speedometer (!). In fact, the driving model is so complex (at least by casual, non-racing simulator standards), that one mandatory story mission that requires you to win a race (old-timey wheeled cigar style cars of course - goggles required) actually includes a semi-hidden shortcut that allows you to win without any effort. Other improvements in the "auto" department over Grand Theft Auto include passengers taking damage from collisions (!) and freelook shooting while driving (!!), the latter being understandably slightly hampered by being limited to pistols. It took Rockstar 6 years to include these features in GTAIV. Also, unlike any GTA game or clone before or after, the police fine you for breaking the speed limit or running red lights (!!!). As said before, the "meat" of the game is the mission based story mode which is pretty well done. There is a bare-bones "open world" mode that was included almost as an afterthought and an unlockable "extreme open world" mode which the developers poured all the pent-up GTA (more like Saints Row, anachronistically enough) zaniness into. To summarize: if you ever 100%ed a GTA game and enjoyed doing so, you will probably find Mafia too limiting. For everyone else, it's a must-try.

A game you can't refuse

Mafia has definitely made an impression! Where the game really shines is the plot and characters. Visuals have aged fairly nicely in my estimation. It shows a bit of age with gun play, walking, driving etc. Music apparently has been butchered for this re-release but I can't tell first hand having never played Mafia before this. It's worth playing even today BUT be aware there's some bugs like sporadic crashes and invisible map markers. Not a huge deal but it means some backtracking because Mafia has this annoying checkpoint autosave. At worst points you would need to do a long boring drive just before a tricky shootout, a bit of a design flaw if you can't make your own saves. The game involves a lot of driving (and not seldom on the same routes keep in mind) so take that into consideration as well. It would have been a bit more interesting were it not for police on every street and street corner enforcing the speed limit. At points it gets ridiculous, example: two mobster vehicles engaged in a crazy shootout as they are blazing down the city street, the police join the fray with a speeding ticket...in short map traversal is a bit tedious but it's well worth looking past if you are in the mood for some epic crime drama! At points in which the game is not bogged down with tedious strolls around town or long winded tram rides it can actually be quite immersive and tense. If you can look past the flaws, definitely give it a go.

Stylish classic

Playing Mafia is like reading a book, it has such an absorbing story which pulls you in and won't let go. What a classic of the 2000's. The game shines in storytelling, soundtrack and atmosphere. but the engine is showing its age.
