Description
Your mission: colonize new worlds on distant planets. As the Mission Commander, you and the Mechanized Assault & Exploration (M.A.X.) force under your command are the first ones in. Mining stations, power plants, tactical combat vehicle factories, habitats – it's up to you to plan and construct them.
The entire new colony? You create it. The resources you find there? Control them. Enemies? Crush 'em! And there will be enemies. You're not the only Mission Commander trying to colonize the planets. You'll have to push yourself to the limit to survive the ultimate showdown in strategic warfare. It's espionage, heavy artillery, offensives, counter offensives and intelligence – all with maximum consequences.
At its core, M.A.X. is about resource-gathering, building, and tactical combat. The game offers more than 50 land, sea, and air units, most of which can be upgraded to improve their armor, speed, and range. You can play as one of eight different factions with different advantages for each one. Discover new scenarios, units and more with the sequel - M.A.X. 2. Now both games bundled together!
A level of complexity unseen in contemporary strategy games
Choose either real-time or turn-based game mode to fit your personal preference
Play as one of 8 human clans and use dozens upon dozens of land, sea and air units
I love this game.
I played this game ten years ago, but I still rememeber one map with my friend.
I launched heavy strike with my heavy units like artillery, heavy tanks, and I was destroying everything on my way. I was curious why he is not defending his territory.
Suddenly his fast units hit my middle part of my convoy, all supply trucks were destroyed and my invincible army was turned into salvage few rounds later, because lack of ammo and supply for repair bots.
If you like real strategy, just buy this game.
As the title says, this isn't the best turn-based strategy I played, but it's not bottom of the bucket either. The second game doesn't feel right, it feels like it was included as an afterthought. That is no problem though because I paid $6 for the original M.A.X. I read about it on another site and was shocked a game this old wasn't abandonware yet, then I found it for sale and bought it. Don't regret that buy, the first game is 4-stars but just including the second game left a bad taste in my mouth and knocked the review down to 3, I wouldn't pay for M.A.X. 2 if I could help it.
Since the current available GOG version of MAX 1 (v1.04 - r21516) already contains the last available DOS/32A v9.12 extender, I had very high hopes to see round based gameplay above 100+ rounds... but sadly, nothing changed at all!
After I've crossed round 95, either from there the game crashes permanently everytime you try to end the round, or it developes some weird behavior, and finally after round 102-105 it's really game over, at least for me! :((
Tried it on my W8.1 game box with 2 fresh game restarts, until round 95 starts everything runs smoothly, and after hitting round 96 you're doomed!
Really sad, because I totally liked MAX 1 since its first appearance back in the 90's (then played on an P75 with W98SE, and already buggy like hell ^^ ), but yeah, since the game never got any proper W2k/XP/Vista/7/8.1/10 upgrade I guess it's finally the end, especially since Interplay seems to be as dead as a doornail right now... their webpage is mostly empty now, but it seems it was still alive some time ago...
It's really unbelievable to me that no one was able to do some kind of fan made patch or fix since the 1st release in 1996, and it seems the original developer crew also shifted into another dimension? (or dead already?!)
Well, I'm going back to my corner and will shed some tears about the situation... :/
