Quite good, albeit being flawed
This is of course a classic point'n'click adventure game, something I am a big fan of. I played this many years ago as a child and along the years, I had forgotten about it. Just recently I downloaded this and found a pretty good game. The graphics are good for the time and helps in providing the dark atmospheric feel that I had come to expect from the rather scary intro. Regardless, the sound is certainly quite bad, so you'll need to play around with the sound settings via SCUMMVM to actually get something that won't hurt your ears too badly. The gameplay is rather difficult because it suffers from the same point'n'click 'use-everything-on-everything-on-and-on' problem, and while your mission is clear, your objectives are not. To put it briefly, it's an old game and it shows, but it's definitely not bad.

A Daring Game...
...in that it differed from popular games at the time. It would be fair to acknowledge that King Graham of Daventry from the King's Quest Series was usually involved in unlikely events, whereas Revolution Software came up with the idea of creating an adventure game that although it didn't take itself TOO serious, did have a serious story, bravely putting themselves somewhere between Lucas Arts and Sierra. It was the first built with the Virtual Theatre Engine allowing in-game characters to wander around its world independent of each other, performing everyday life actions, which before had never been featured in ANY game. A 2D point-and-click interface adventure with a system of drop down lists, you guide your hero Diermot through his world and interact with the environment selecting from different commands via the mouse, picking up various objects which can be used with other collectable items, with parts of the scenery, or with other people in order to solve puzzles. You'll engage in dialogue with other characters through textual conversation trees which will provide hints as to what needs to be done in order to progress through the plot. A few action oriented battle scenes are also part of the game. Somewhat extra-ordinary is the fact that all sounds are done via music, placed just in the right place, as well as tunes very sparingly utilized to create a somber world. One might say this game was REVOLUTIONary for its time; pardon the pun. You can play through it in three or four easy sittings. A picture is worth a thousand words so I imagine a video could be worth more. Good game, despite it's flaws
I remember when this game came out, for the time it was a pretty fantastic game, now of course it seems clunky and a little slow to our eyes. However if you're looking for a bite size piece of entertainment then this game is absolutely perfect, the difficulty is just right, not so hard it becomes boring and repetitive, nor so easy it's just plain dull. I highly recommend getting this game, especially since it's free!

Good for it's time...
Unfortunately, the programming is still a little hacky. It's short. Something you can finish in an afternoon. Then again, what do you want for free?
