Description
Witness the rebirth of a genre in Lumo – a classic isometric adventure with a modern twist for gamers young and old alike!

As a contemporary take on the long-lost isometric platform genre, Lumo can be enjoyed by anyone looking for an absorbing, challenging and rewarding adventure. But for those who lived through the golden age of videogames – the 80s and early 90s – or know about the games and culture from that time, layer upon layer of nods, winks and touches to those times help build upon an experience that’s as heart-warming as it is exciting!

With over 400 rooms across four unique zones, six hidden mini-games and all kinds of secrets to uncover, Lumo is a true voyage of discovery. How much you discover just depends on how hard you look…
  • Lumo revives the long-lost art of isometric platforming, while bringing a charm of all its own to the genre.
  • Over 400 rooms will test your skill, each one a self-contained challenge to overcome.
  • The more you look, the more you'll find – from a hugely absording adventure on the surface to all kinds of secrets to find underneath!
  • A true love letter to the golden age of gaming… adventures don't get much more heart-warming than this!

empty gameplay

It's an isometric puzzle platformer, which are all things I like. It also has physics-based puzzles and 3D graphics, both of which I am decidedly less fond of. For a self-proclaimed "love letter to the golden age of gaming", I found it unpleasantly modern. However, the biggest problem is not the modernisms, but the utter lack of context. There is no plot, just a couple of pointless bookend scenes that the game would have been better without. There is no coherent setting, just a bunch of puzzle rooms thrown together in a mostly linear sequence. There are no characters expect for the personality-less player character. There is no goal for the player beyond moving through the rooms. There's nothing really wrong with the core gameplay, but without some added context, it feels empty.

Inspired by Solstice on the NES

Solstice was one of my favourite games on the NES. You probably already bought Lumo if you were a fan as from screenshots it is obviously a tribute to that great game. I can confirm that it is very similar - some rooms are similar or sometimes the same as Solstice rooms (from what I recall) and it controls the same and has similar mechanics. No probem with the controls if you are playing with a d-pad, they are responsive and tight, similar to Solstice. You can choose which direction is up (ie, up is up, up is up-left, or up is up-right). The game also hides secrets in the way older games did and the way Solstice did (ie, not so obvious) so they are rewarding to find. The music is appropriately mystical, I enjoy it. The only thing I could think to improve is the shadows, they are there, but aren't as obvious as Solstice but they are generally sufficient to help maneuvre in isomatric space. It's a very minor thing though and if you are playing with unlimited lives a misstep here and there doesn't matter. I found it a great dose of nostalgia and an enjoyable game in its own right. Really glad someone was a big enough fan of Solstice to reimagine it!

Enchanting. Probably not for everybody.

Lumo's setting, style, and mood are even stranger than they appear at first (which is already pretty strange). But if you remember the earliest days of computer games fondly and are willing to embrace a very dream-like and light hearted homage to them, then you will enjoy it. Similarly, if you cut your teeth on the sometimes frustrating (or down right infuriating) gameplay of old, there is plenty to be appreciated here. You will have to step back and take a minute to judge how to time your moves. You will die attempting to accurately judge distances due to the perspective. You will likely die over and over and over trying to get a jump just right. If that's the sort of thing you can enjoy, you will find several clever challenges, tempting secrets, and charming surprises in Lumo. Technically speaking, I played with a controller and I recommend you do the same. I see some reviews have complained about the keyboard controls, and I can see how the isometric perspective could make keyboard difficult. The game also started automatically on my second monitor and there was no in-game option to switch it;, no option for windowed mode, etc. For me, this was a minor inconvenience. P.S. Do try out the different control schemes and pick the one you are comfortable with!
