The RPG mechanics were good, combat eventually became manageable with summoning or other buffs like blessings. There is crafting for herbal solutions that can even improve stats or resistances permanently. Can't say that the loot was appealing, mostly scrolls and potions some armor or weapons. Couldn't understand why the first halberd I found had a -15 attack rating. Then around level 5 the game seemed to tunnel into puzzle and impossible combats. There were traps that were undetectable and could kill the entire party at level 4. When it got to the point of puzzle/trap/death/reload constantly, I decided to move on.
First, the good - music is good, picture is beautiful, game play is rather interesting. Is it worth to get? Yes, on sale.
Second. In this review i will concentrate on critics mostly. While playing i found 3 main areas of problems
1) World design. Creators claim that you will get "giant" world to explore, but in truth is no that big. Its not small either, but considering amount of solid forests, mountains and stuff you have not so much to explore as you may think. A lot of backtracking is also problem. Design is repetitive - 4 castles, 4 towers, 4 churches, 4 witches. After some gameplay there is stable sequence repeating again and again. Luck of difference is big.
2) Gameplay. Items is scarce and often useless, food is pain in ass, random encounters is both overwhelming and often boring, but considering need of grind is unavoidable. Big amount of luck is needed because its easy to stumble in extra hard enemies, but thanks to game there is option to flee at least. Additional problem is stats, for example you constantly need to increase constitution to get more weight you can carry but for many characters these stats is not very important. Speed is often most important skill.
3) Main dish. Technical problems. As Linux user i can say version for Linux is "lazy port". In other words, its rather low quality. Game uses Mono (which already not good news) and leaks memory. A lot. Longer you play more memory it hogs. Its often starts to get choppy and drop frame rates with no reason. Battle scenes with a lot of enemies feels slow and laggy. Did i mention that games constantly drops to "loading" screen when switches to battle and map? Sometimes these loading stall and you doomed to kill game. Sometimes games loses all textures and screen filled with black patches - need to restart. Several times games managed to hang whole system to me. Not like its often but its happens. Its also need 32bit libs to run. Considering time passed these bugs will never be solved.
I cant help to review this game with my personal opinion, but first i want to lay the facts on some neutral ground.
The core game itself its decent. The game features some original RPG elements and mechanics, which is nice, battle system is classic and simple. I only felt that the main storyline was a bit weak, i wont spoil anything, but in general, you dont get to feel much inmersion into the story, and although its original, it still feels a bit off putting. Side quest are generic, and boring.
Now, on to my opinion and critique.
This game is annoying. Its hard to explain, but the game has a lot of elements and designs that are introduced simply to annoy you, in a original idea to provide some "realism" or to make the game feel "hardcore", it ends up feeling like your simply wasting time or just getting trolled. You will experienced it when walking through a web with spiders... Mind your speaker volume, this game boast some peaking/clipping samples that are just annoying, i ended up playing it with the master volume ingame down to 20%... You are walking through a jungle? prepare to get sting by mosquitos every 5 seconds. They only deal 1 or 2 of damage to a random character, and by the time you reach the jungle, your characters have pretty much 200-400 + of health. So it doesnt have an impact in your travels, but you still hear that annoying buzz of the mosquito everytime you get sting. The game features several mechanics like this, that are applied to create inmersion but end up being annoying.
The art style and color scheme is off putting, i couldnt shake the feeling i was playing a Facebook game app. I rather take old DOS graphics that this game heavily rounded figures with high color and contrast.
The game favors the need to grind experience, but it prevents you from doing it, with the ambush system. Forcing you to walk up and down a corridor just to get ambushed and get the experience and spoils.
In conclusion. I dont recomend this game.
Please re-think your purchase of this game.
I have to say, I thought long and hard before purchasing this game. I watched video footage, read reviews, and finally took the leap. Once in game, as I have posted on the Steam Forums, I was met with an "invisible prison" while walking around the first town... where my character becomes trapped and cannot move from one spot as the walking cycle continues to animate. It is beyond frustrating. What is worse is that after repeatedly posting on the Steam Forums about this, it has been all but completely ignored, having at the time of this posted review, one comment from the developer who asked about specifics that were clearly posted, which were then ignored further.
One thing that truly gets under my skin is when a developer brushes off comments of bugs or issues from a paying consumer, and simply moves on to other endeavors, because they have received their money and are done with the buyer. The Steam Forums have become strangely silent, and it looks as though the developer has decided to ignore the bugs and issues that have been posted over there.
I will be happy to remove this rating and review, once the developer is willing to do more than simply brush aside game breaking bugs. Until then...
