Great game, terrible Linux port

I won't repeat what other reviewers have already posted about the game. It's maddening at times, suffers fools poorly and will beat you up at EVERY given chance. Documentation is lacking (online guides are absolutely required) and some of the choices in character building are flat-out bewildering. That said, I'm enjoying this game immensely and the replay value is huge. However, the reason for just a three star review is the woefully bad Linux port. Performance on Ubuntu 19.0/ i5-7500/12 GB/GeForce 1050ti is downright pathetic. Numerous crashes (usually when loading a new level which happens frequently) and the combat screen will slow to a crawl if more than 4-5 enemies are drawn, which makes the game almost unplayable. It actually runs better on my ancient i3/Geforce 730 Windows box! Whilst I applaud the devs for making a Linux port in the first place, we deserve batter than this. Sigh...

Perfect for me

I was scared to play this game, everyone saying that it is very hard and difficult. I like making choices and thinking about my party and their skills and gear but I don't want things like getting maried, think about what you want for dinner or doing my laundry before I go out on a quest. I have a real life for that. Back to difficulty, it isn't difficult, that is if you take the right steps. You can go everywhere you want in the game but the game doesn't let you roam freely because you simply can't defeat an enemy in your path (yet). Creating the party is another choice to consider not doing yourself. I have a balanced team with everything I need to enjoy the game. Music, sounds, atmosphere, food and gathering system is all good. Fighting is where the game is different from games like baldur's gate. You get a first person view of the enemies and you can switch characters from front to back row or sideways. Of course best to keep your fightcrew in front and support from my healing- singing- and firetrowingcrew in the back. It can be difficult and frustrating, you miss a lot and you fail a lot but if you don't attack everything you see it all works out. It is turn based and you can think about your choice so speed and skill isn't needed. Beautiful game world for me. Lots of people to interact with and you don't have to talk to everyone for an hour. The story, seeing your party getting better with your choices and the not to much micromanaging are just right for me. You develop in the game with every step, I never have the feeling that I have to grind a lot to advance and I don't need to much backtracking. conclusion: A very nice game with a good atmosphere, just the perfect amount of managing and overthinking your skills and inventory and a difficulty that keeps you going the right way but not putting me of from playing the game. Who will like it? People that like baldur's gate that don't want to much choices and like the idea of the different fighting system.

Starts okay, devolves into unfun game

I was learning the mechanics, some good, others clunky. Then it started devolving into puzzle/death/reload. I mean moving carefully between enemies or traps or flowers of sleep, meh. Being level 4 and coming across trap after trap that decimates entire party - reload. Is not fun

Excellent game

An excellent game. Took me about 52 hours to complete on normal difficulty. Provides open-ended gameplay in a world that is increasingly more difficult as you go along. At first I was afraid that there would be too much repetition, but in the end the game kept me interested throughout. The writing was much better than expected.

It had me making all the right noises

Argh! Grrr! Seriously?!? Yes!!! And I finished within a week, first try, on Veteran. As somebody who eventually buys just about every CRPG that's made, this one was a surprise. Well, first try was aborted at level 13, call it a taste test. I knew by then enough about the game to go back and give it a more strategic go. And, there's plenty of help in the forums when you're stuck. I enjoyed many of the puzzles, which were probably a bit easier than those in many classic CRPG's, but then, too many of those were just impossible, especially without the internet... I don't see much replay value, since once you've won, now you know how to do it. Try again on hardcore with a different party composition maybe? But at $7.99 on sale a couple weeks ago, this was a great buy. If you've been gaming since Ultima III like me, just give this one a once through, you won't regret it. If you want a challenge, go bleed or wounds, stun makes the endgame a bit trivial.
