Meh.

The game appeared very open and complex at my first or two or three tries, however, at some point, you realize that the complexity of the plot is merely an illusion. The difficulty of this game emerges only from the fact that the game simply does not tell you anything about events that are going to happen. If you trained the wrong stats (because you thought that a certain combination of stats would make sense): tough luck, game over As such the game ends up being a trial-and-error experience in which you have to restart two or three times until you find out the correct combination of stats. It's also quite short, I finished it (including my first three failed trial and error attempts) in about 3 or 4 hours. Right when the intrigue and momentum started going, the game just ended and showed me two screens, dragon age origins style, detailing how things evolve. The story path I followed really feels like the devs ran out of money / time / ambition when they were about 40% done with it. It literally ends when the intrigue and (apparent) scheeming was reaching it's climax As the events are not randomized and always happen at the same time, there really isn't a lot of replay value, too All in all it was a fun ride, but once you get past the illusion of difficulty and hardcoreness of the game it loses a lot of it's charm

Cute princesses die too!

...and they die a lot! Don't be fooled by the cutesy animé look, this game is hardcore! Your job is to guide the young princess Elodie through most of a year, by making crucial decisions and increasing the right stats. What are the right stats? Well, that all depends on which of the twisted paths you are lead onto. Just know that each and every game you'll probably make a bad choice that may well lead to an untimely end. Each week of the game you choose which classes to attend, which will increase skills depending on your mood. In the weekends you have a chance to directly influence mood through various actions in and about the castle. Of course every week also brings an event with skill checks and heavy choices. You may face treacherous nobles, foreign armies, evil magicians, monsters in the woods or even disgruntled peasant uprisings! Gameplay seems simplistic, but know that this is a game that rewards planning for what you'll face in advance, which requires multiple playthroughs and book keeping. Of course, your plans may well topple due to a new and unforeseen event that you didn't encounter the last time around. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys challenging stat balancing and good writing.

Princess Maker Fans Rejoice

For those looking for an English remake of the classic Princess Maker series may well want to give this a run, it follows the same principles in that a young princess is in your hands. She will advance skills depending on your schooling and choices outside of that (free time), as well as her mood governs her rate of learning for specific skillsets. Although the story, in my opinion, is lacking with depth and real choice and consequence there is still enough that could warrant a second playthrough. The characters are also quickly forgettable and the silent dialogue can make the game a borefest fast, unless you love to read. I find the "gameplay" to actually be more linear than the Princess Maker series since those games allowed you to set schedules for the week/month, choosing different school subjects and free time activity however you want. This game is more straight-forward and simple, streamlined if you will, and this may turn some of you away hoping for a simulation-esque game instead. Overall, this is a hit or miss one, you're gonna love or hate it, like marmite. I would imagine those who love reading and character progression will be knees deep in this, as well as many Princess Maker fans, but those who want a deep, complex, choice and consequence system - look elsewhere.

Trial and error game

Like Elo001 I thought the game could have been longer. But it is not about the length. It is about depth. Don't aim to survive long enough. Aim to uncover all unlockables. I thought I know everything about the game. But after a 2 weeks pause I started playing again, training different stats, making different decisions, and I got quite a new story. Friends turned into foes and vice versa. Secrets uncovered. Achievements unlocked. If I thought I know all the four outcomes of some situation, I discovered the fifth one I could not even think of. Save the game whenever you have options, then load to try all of them. Once you have a "test bubble" failed, replay the game so that you succeed and see what will happen. What I value most in games is this expectation "What is going to happen next?" And this game has a lot of things to happen.

It's not about winning or losing!

Long Live the Queen is a game about making decisions. You select what stats to boost each week of the life of the young princess Elodie after the plot starts. These stats influence how well she fares in different situations, and the choices offered to you. Example: you decided to boost your intrigue stats. Thus, when that nobleman comes to talk to you, you know that there's something fishy going on. So the game will offer choices based on this. Interrogate him? Imprison him? Execute him? It's up to you. These choices will define what happens next. There is no random element. And this is why it's so interesting. The plot is set in a medieval fantastic world with an impressively complex political setup. You may find yourself taking notes about the characters, their position, and even their history or attitude. You'll find that everything makes sense. Even if your goal is to keep Elodie alive until her coronation, it's really about making stories and enjoying them. Even ending up with a death is not a failure, because you just made another story, and probably enjoyed it. Plus, there's a nice death collection menu. Did you ever die by drowning? By monsters? Poisoned? I enjoy playing it from time to time because it's always so different. Even my last game was full of surprises and plot revelations. And I played more than 50 games. It's really not about winning or losing the game. It's all about the stories you make.
