Frustrating in the worst way
I played the first part and liked it, so I decided to give this one a shot. Unfortunately I'm disappointed This game is frustrating in the worst way. And I have tried Dark Souls bosses thousands of times over and over again to the point of almost going insane so I know frustration on a first name basis. First of all the companion is just useless most of the time and sometimes even annoying. There's no emotional connection, the companion only helps in very specific ways and often just saves his ass while you're still on the run. Or at least that's what it feels like because it does not feel like a partnership at all or like he even wants to help you. I would have prefered him not being there honestly but that's just my opinion. For a good companion-style game definitely check out "Brothers". Second, the way the puzzles work. For one, why would you include 3D platforming in a 2D game? It feels awkward and frustrating when you can't even see in what direction you're jumping. Then the game isn't really about getting better or learning skills, it's just about finding the exactly right timing or niche solution or working out a very specific mechanic (looking at you flashlight). Basically find out what exactly the game wants and if you do it even just a little bit wrong start over. There's no room for error or for even slightly indiviual ways of solving things. I have to say the aesthetic and mood are definitely nice though and the game does pull you in and it feels good to solve a puzzle. So if looks and a little horror is just your thing and you have a high tolerance for frustration you might still like it, but overall I wouldn't recommend Little Nightmares II.
