The game has an original premise going for it, great atmosphere, and great visuals. What mars this review is the short story (can beat in under a week) and unoriginal, repetitive game mechanics (I'm looking at you robotic arm).
Lifeless Planet is an attempt at an atmospheric walking simulator set on a strange planet with some mysterious remnants of few, now gone civilizations. While it sometimes succeeds in the atmospheric part and keeps the mystery for far longer than it deserves, none of it is very rewarding, and much of it feels more tedious than entertaining. It breaks the exploration with some platforming and few puzzles here and there, but because of generally bad handling and some game breaking bugs, they are almost always unwelcome.
When I first learned of this game, I was confused but also excited because the premise felt so unusual - a a manned mission to distant planet and... SOVIET BUILDINGS!? How? Obviously it was a mystery that needed solving.
The gameplay is a bit tedious with all the walking and jumping (some areas were particularly annoying to jump over even with the jump-pack), later on you also have to dodge evil aliens.
The finale left me hungry (and all the green kinda made me feel sick). The premise is there, the storytelling is there, the ATMOSPHERE is there (seriously, there's some really nice scenery in this game, especially in the later parts), but somehow the game fails to actually give you a proper conclusion. Yes, you return home, and yes, it's implied that Aelita (the Soviet survivor you meet on the planet) is still out there somewhere, but it just doesn't feel very satisfying.
I'd say it's a pretty solid attempt for (according to the developer) his first indie game. Overall, if you want something slow and atmospheric with a cool premise, this game is definitely for you. If you want action, and big twists in storytelling, then this game is probably not for you.
Graphics - very impressive for an Indie game, runs better Crossfire does not work with this game, but it is so easy to run its not an issue
Gameplay - nice little puzzles, very cool story, exploration is very fun and open, this is not a linear game :)
I backed this almost two years ago, so been waiting for a long ass time, the guy who made it always responded to my questions on kickstarter forum :) dude rocks
