I've tried to launch it 2 times after installing 2 times, but still crashes in my Windows 7. I would like to know if someone knows a fix for this, or it will be a waste... If I manage to play it, I will change this review.
I've played this game on Xbox and that's why I can say it's amazing, I really like a lot. So for me it's a "Must play". Unfortunately i'm giving 1 star here because a whole different reason and because I have realized that I'm not the only one with this problem. So if you are new here like me or you want to buy this game be aware.
I bougth both LIS and Before the Storm and none of them run, I've done the forum's suggestions, even the support's "solutions" and nothing works. Nothing happen with LIS and I mean literaly nothing after I double clic, and with Before the storm a crash message pops up even before start. I have tried both instalations, from GOG Galaxy and browser "Offline backup files" and as I said, I've tried different suggestions in forums and support but the result is always the same. I've had issues in other plataforms but nothing like this before.
So since this is my very first pursache here I don't have any parameter to compare or deduce why is this happen or if is this regular in GOG, I've send reports but non a single ticket have been sent to my email. So please GOG, don't let me get a wrong idea about you.
A friend recommended checking this out. So, when it went on sale for $4, I couldn't pass it up. Our tastes don't always match, and they hadn't played even the first episode all the way through. I am so glad I picked this up. I think I got 3 hours per episode, so 15 hours to get through the story line. I'm the RPG person who will try to get 100% playthough the first time through. I very quickly realized to enjoy this story, I should not do that. I also second guess the choices that I make, and, for some reason, everyone in the story MUST like me. So, this whole story line was rather difficult for me, as I questioned every decission I made. Once I got through the first and half of the second, I realized how much your actions really DO affect the story line, it made the anxiety worse. Once I realized that in a way, I'm helping to write the story, I just got sucked in even more. Yes, I was the kid keeping three to four fingers holding the pages at the decission points in the 'Pick Your Own Adventure' books.
The story is compelling, and has some good branching. Once the pieces fell into place, I felt horrible for the choices I made, but there's always another play through to "get it right." Like wise the voice actors and direction was VERY well done. For some reason Hannah Telle's (Max) voice for some reason gave me Alexis Bledel vibes. There were plenty of times I found myself staring at the screen, mouth wide open, and eyes watering.
The time mechanics seem really cool at first. For puzzles or conversations, if you miss something just re-wind. Later on, pieces get introduced to make it a little more complex. There are some fantastic scenes with a lot of energy, and the developers played around with the time winding mechanics to try to push the player to feel the urgency of the moments.
Good overall art design. Low quality animation. Characters are like muppets, so I'm glad the voice acting was spot on. I wanna punch, hug, and slap some characters!
What this is:
A choose your own novel in 3D environment, some simplified puzzles (move the box over, stand on it to reach item), high school drama, simplistic butterfly effect time travel story.
Liked:
* banger soundtrack
* good looking visuals, it has a timeless cartoon feel
* Kate's bullies subplot (first half of the game) is actually interesting
* very nice voice acting, especially Chloe (Ashly Burch)
* I find it a brave design decision to expect _all_ players liking a certain character
* some of the characters are well-written, up to chapter 4
Didn't like:
* final decision retroactively makes earlier decisions irrelevant
* time travel effects are mostly used for shock value, and are never explained. I found the euthanasia scene especially distasteful
* the game works with emotions, and expects the player to like Chloe to a certain extent. If this is not the case (which happened with me), emotional impact is nearly non-existent
* which is a problem, since Chloe is not easy to like. Very selfish, reckless, irresponsible.
* the protagonist is quite annoying. Judgemental internal monologue, quick to accuse others without thinking
* writing quality takes a deep dive later in the game, especially in chapter 5
Recommended?
Maybe. I would actually recommend it to younger players (under 23) who are closer in age to high school drama.
If you are looking for interesting environmental interaction, player agency or fun puzzles, you will not find them here.
...woman's descent into madness.
As I played, the more outlandish the narrative and characters became, the less engaged I felt. At least until the final episode, when I realised that the ever more exaggerated and disturbed characters and situations were a reflection of Max's deteriorating mental state.
It made sense to me that her mind would piece together such an elaborate delusion by using references and storylines from pop culture. The fantasy she constructed included end-of-the-world premonitions and extreme traumatic events. She oscillated between feelings of omnipotence and impotence and came to see herself as the instrument of destiny. Max was tumbling down the rabbit-hole and, until I realised what was happening, I was tumbling with her...
In the end, my Max had fallen too far - she chose fantasy over reality.
(1 star off because the gameplay is often tedious and the facial animation seems sub-par for a character-driven piece)
