An FPS, using Magic instead of Bullets

The title says it all. This is not a Role Playing game, although you do take on the role of a male or female of the protagonist. There is no leveling your character, no classes, no races to choose from, etc. This is not an RPG. Magic and Fantasy setting doesn't equal RPG. Lichdom: Battlemage is an FPS. In fact, it's a good FPS, where your mage character wields powerful, replenishing spells. Fallen enemies drop spell modifying "loot", in the same way that vanquished enemies drop guns in Borderlands. Being an FPS means that this is a game of SKILL, and progresses in a linear fashion. Think Call of Duty, instead of a sandbox adventure like Far Cry. And the use of the Crytek engine ensures that the game is GORGEOUS looking. The graphics are AAA, the voice acting is very good, though not great. There aren't many varieties of fodder bad guys, but the Bosses are all unique and memorable. If you got this game for 80% off, like I did at GoG.com, it was an absolute steal. I don't know why this game didn't make more money when it was released.

Can be better but recommended

Things the game does well: Be a battlemage. It just feels so good, you're not just casting the same old spells and waiting for the mana to refill. You're slinging spells that look and feel powerful. Giant pillars of fires, freezing the enemies, infesting them with stuff. You can tailor the spells to your need. There are different elements that can have different side-effects on each spells. The spells themselves have "shapes" you can use - a stream, a bolt, which can be made out of fire or ice, depending on what element is used. The biggest drawback: The random drops. I don't think having random drops is bad, what I find most annoying about them is how you have to stop and do "inventory management" for about 5 minutes. The "inventory" is various spell parts you get - you can apply them to spells for various extra effects (instead of having equipment with stats as other games would give you). Most of them are useless. You can combine them to get better ones but it's still random. Overall, it's just a chore. It feels annoying to have to stop being a mage to deal with the inventory every once in a while. Neutral-ish: the level design is mostly linear with the occasional side path. The magic needs a while to master. There are several interlocking systems where you can stack what's called "mastery" which is then consumed for more powerful damage or control effects. Story is nothing to write home about - pushes you forward to kill more things. Overall: the game would be middling. But I feel the magic system really shines. It's definitely an interesting take on spellcasting. It would be worth getting the game to experience it. Feel free to wait for a discount.

Spellcrafting+ Spellblasting = Fun!

So, you can cast spells. So you are mage. So you think you are all powerful? Well, let me put it this way. HELL YEAH you are! If you master the concepts that apply to spellcasting in this game (Tutorials are included) you can smash enemies to bits by using A LOT of different spells doing A LOT of things in this game. What you get with Lichdom: Battlemage is a first-person action game with a story to follow that is not going to blow your mind away(diplomatic speech applied). You also get the best possible chance that I know of to go downright crazy with a mix of strategic spellcasting and shooter gameplay. It is not too easy to get how some spells are supposed to work together, but if you work through that - the tutorials in the game are well done and help a lot - you can have a fantastic time spellcasting your way through different enemies, hordes of enemies, boss enemies and nasty annoying enemies.

Nice Surprise

Really like that game. Why? Action! Atmosphere! Cleaning world from evil. It is a quick game, need good mouse and comfortable place, it is fps by spells rather than crpg. Most of time if possible, I`m playing as Mage, last 20 years, especially using elemental magic ^ This is a really good BATTLE Mage simulator. It is linear yet interesting, it is pricey but I get it on discount. It could be better with more characters to play (just two) and some side quest, yet good enough to give 4/5.

Try it. You must try it. FUN as hell !

As a huge RPG player, I spent hours looking for user reviews of this game. The way it is depicted doesn't sell well I'm affraid. But you should try it, because although it is really linear, it is sur a lot of fun. There are tons of things to experiment with the spell system, and this title as that badass feeling you expect from a magic oriented title. More over, it is beautiful, and the immersion in this world is great. There is not much thng to say about the plot, wich is just passable, uninteresting for the most part, and falsely complicated. I just regret they didn't focus on something simpler, eg you are in a magic school and discover your powers before going experimenting into the wild. It would have been less cliché. This is an overall good game, and the last versions showed that the developpers care about their public with some improvements in the interface. This isn't a game you play for the RPG aspect. This is a game you play for the FUN and the originality of the gameplay. There is much to explore and I'll be digging it until the real RPG's come out (pillars of eternity and the witcher)
