An FPS, using Magic instead of Bullets
The title says it all. This is not a Role Playing game, although you do take on the role of a male or female of the protagonist. There is no leveling your character, no classes, no races to choose from, etc. This is not an RPG. Magic and Fantasy setting doesn't equal RPG. Lichdom: Battlemage is an FPS. In fact, it's a good FPS, where your mage character wields powerful, replenishing spells. Fallen enemies drop spell modifying "loot", in the same way that vanquished enemies drop guns in Borderlands. Being an FPS means that this is a game of SKILL, and progresses in a linear fashion. Think Call of Duty, instead of a sandbox adventure like Far Cry. And the use of the Crytek engine ensures that the game is GORGEOUS looking. The graphics are AAA, the voice acting is very good, though not great. There aren't many varieties of fodder bad guys, but the Bosses are all unique and memorable. If you got this game for 80% off, like I did at GoG.com, it was an absolute steal. I don't know why this game didn't make more money when it was released.
