Nice art/music; clunky and restrictive

After a couple of years since the release I won't add much to what others have already written, but here it is anyway: I found the presentation (graphics and music) very nice. The soundtrack consists of 22 tracks that fit well. Since the soundtrack is available separately (not here, but exclusively on another site), and I am going to buy it. What follows is a rather long list of problems I've encountered, however I am still motivated to continue, despite the flaws. Reading the other reviews, quite a lot of players were not. The problems started right from the start in the tutorial that was already so unclear in the first mission that I had to refer to the internet to get further. This lack of clarity of why things are happening and how to achieve or prevent things is also present in the main game. I found the interface quite clunky and sometimes annoying. Fonts and symbols are sometimes so small that they are hardly decipherable. It is sometimes difficult to click on the correct building with other buildings next to it. Placing mines is quite tricky, as they can't exactly placed in a way that the map indicates etc. Finally I had to accept that there is little freedom in the way of constructing the cities. I once had four wells and maintenance buildings and my buildings were nevertheless degrading until I found out that it was because of my town having intersections. After I left the intersections out, everything was working well with one well and maintenance building. This is too erratic and opaque to me, even with the help of the program indicating which route the service personal will likely walk. Showing the number of free workers instead of the percentage would also be more useful, as well as how many workers a building needs beforehand. The existence of an autosave makes sense, since the game crashed several times during my sessions. This reminds me again that focussing more on the interface, accessibility and QA would have been beneficial.

An Artists City Builder

Lethis is a city building game in the spirit of Caesar in the sense that you are required to build maintenance buildings so your buildings do not collapse and build bumpers so that your service people only go where you want them to. To me, both mechanics are nothing but annoying. It is an artists game in the sense that the steampunk art style and atmosphere is well done. It is also an artists game in the sense that it is technically abysmal. Loading takes ages. On my admittedly low end machine it runs a lot worse than it should, given that the graphics are just a bunch of sprites. The rather nice music is not looping properly. The mouse movement is very sluggish. Clicking on buildings select the wrong one half of the time. Placing buildings often does not work, even though it plays the placement sound. The fonts are too small and there is no way to adjust them. A problem that might be specific to my system is that the ground textures are missing. If you like Caesar-style city builders, get Caesar and a widescreen patch, don't waste your money on this nice looking horror of a game.

Cluncky and missing Features

The game looks pretty but it has alot of problems: It is hard to manage the city. If you made one misttake your whole city burns down. Comfort functions are completly missing. Information are rare and not very helpful. it is sooooo sad. The game had a great potential, but it needs a better Usability to get well playable.

Not worth the money

First, the positives. I really like the art-style and graphics, the setting is a nice change of pace from the "historical" city builders and... Well, that's pretty much it. Beyond the steampunk setting in a fictional world, everything is just like the games it imitates... including all the parts I didn't like about them, most notably the complete lack of pathing AI for workers that forces you to build housing in a very specific pattern that's both unrealistic and pretty boring to look at. Even worse, a bunch of game mechanics that were staples of earlier games have been left out entirely: There's no crime, no fires or other disasters and no health system. There's also no combat, which is admittedly no great loss, but also no diplomacy or reputation system with neighbouring cities either. And that might be why campaign objectives were so repetitive: Have N population in N level housing, produce N of a certain commodity, rinse and repeat with a new building and item. There are apparently some monuments/Great Works projects further on, but to be honest I got bored and quit long before I ever saw those. The one innovative thing the game does try to do is the steam power system, but that's handled in such a half-arsed way that they might as well have not bothered; once you've connected the geothermal vent taps to the big central boiler, the steam supply is... dispensed into small gas bottles that walkers transport in carts to various buildings Only one building needs a direct connection, and you don't even get that until a fair way into the campaign. By a similar token, the walker system is used for distributing water no matter what level the building's at, whereas Caesar 3 managed to implement reservoirs and aqueducts that you needed to build in order to advance past a certain level. Eighteen years ago! All in all, this is a great looking game with a cool art-style and an interesting setting that just isn't very much fun to actually play. Which is a huge shame.

Still a buggy mess

8 years since this game released and it's still a game crashing, gameplay breaking buggy mess, the devs don't answer on forums and oficial support pages. This game is literally abandoned. They only put this on gog to make an extra buck from a new platform. If you want a proper Caesar 3, Pharaoh, Zeus or Emperor like experience try Nebuchadnezzar instead, those devs actually care about their game and their community.
