Unique Art Nouveau graphics achieved through rotoscoping.
One of only a few adventure games played in real-time, among AI-controlled characters with their own goals and means with which to achieve them.

The Last Express is a unique and brilliant game with a fascinating setting (Orient Express on the eve of WW1), intriguing story, and fun gameplay.
The best feature of this game is that it is in real-time, where events take place around you whether you do anything or not. More than 15 years later, I am yet to see this feature implemented so well.
The only disappointing thing is the ending, which is just weird.
After 1-2 days playing The Last Express, I feel extremely grateful I brought the game. It was fun and challenging, something games of today haven't gotten right. Though the graphics are low compared to modern games, the art direction makes the game playable even today, as it removes itself from the traditional art style. There are next to no bugs (something you can't say about the games of today), and is overall an enjoyable experience.
One of the defining games of my childhood. I'm so happy to see it on GOG.com!
If you love an intellectual challenge, late 19th/early 20th century history, or just beautiful art this game is for you.
I came over this gem looking for games set in the 19th or early 20th century. Turns out there are not that many.
The game is not your standard point and click adventure. It is played, more or less, in real time. The characters you interract with will move about their business without your direct involvement, which means that you can miss important dialouge or be too late to perform certain actions. Some of these, though not all, will result in the game "ending".
The Last Express features a lot of spoken dialouge. Not only in English, but also in German, French, Russian, Serbian and Arabic. German and French are the only ones being subtitled, as our character speaks them, but they all add to the atmosphere. The voice acting is very good over all, and really makes the characters come to life.
Graphics are good. They are likely to be the only major downside with the game, viewed with modern eyes, as both story, voice acting and music is excellent, but they have aged reasonably well none the less. The rotoscoped images naturally gives the characters a lot of personality. Naturally almost all movement on screen is quite "jaggy", a limitation of the technology being used. The game very much feels like one of those animated graphic novels. I find that it works very well.
I wholeheartedly recommend this game to any adventure game enthusiast or to anyone in love with the era.
