Wadjet Eye's Nom De Jeu
Over twenty years David Gilbert has developed and produced the best retro adventure games out there, winning passionate fans and well deserved fame for the Wadjet Eye Games brand. As Wadjet Eye moves into the mainstream with hits like Unavowed and Nighthawks, "Grundislav Games" has spun off from the mothership as a kind of Fox Searchlight brand for more offbeat titles. Doing the heavy lifting for this first game is longtime Wadjet Eye Games employee and Gilbert protégé Francisco Gonzalez. Gonzalez wear this legacy on his sleeve. "Lamplight" is a clear nod to Shardlight, one of Wadjet Eye Game's in-house titles, and the concept of a paranormal investigator helped by a ghostly sidekick is a welcome callback to Gilbert's more well-regarded Blackwell series. Lamplight City follows the streamlined design standards laid down in the Unavowed manifesto, eliminating "verbs," puzzles and inventory to make room for branching story and a memorably diverse cast. Just as one hears strains of Harry Potter in books by "Robert Galbraith," the old master's fingerprints and DNA are in Lamplight City too. This is very much a Wadjet Eye game, whatever the label. If you've enjoyed their earlier work, you shouldn't skip this one despite the new label. Can't wait to see what Daivd and Francisco make next!
