I really tried to play this but

The interface man.. the interface. I realize this is an old classic but traipsing back and forth eternally in mazes where the wrong click can send you off on a tangent to who knows where is just not fun. Pros; Very good soundtrack, when I finally gave up I left the game running just so I can listen to the music. Very well done and atmospheric, as well as the intro. Artwork was pretty good for its day, tho grainy and dated nowadays, but I didnt mind that unless it obscured what an item was. The concept was also very innovative and weird enough to suck you into the trip. I may try to go back and finish the game, perhaps a beer or three would help alleviate aggravation so I could. Cons: having enormous mazes with no actionable items in them just seems to me to be filler, to extend the play life of the game. Room after room with useless zoom actions on every light fixture or column base quickly ran out of wow factor, add in that you have to transverse these mazes over and over just added up to a whole lotta of ugh. I was one of the players who made that game finisher error early in the game, thank god I read a wiki on it and found out when I did rather then losing hours trying to make it work. For me the worst part was the overly complicated menu actions, whenever I just wanted to back out of some worthless zoom look I invariably ended up in another room, or you could see doors that were on either side but if you advanced your char ended up in another room entirely. I hope the devs make another game with todays standards for point and click, I am sure their eye for innovative story telling, music immersion and graphical art will make it a winner, but for this classic I have to skip it.

Good game with fatal flaws.

In spite of the nice graphics for the time and the fast game-play, it has weird places to find crucial items and it also has dead ends. At least you can get to the same point fast by restarting since there are no movement animations and you can get through speeding. The game wasn't really stable and crashed multiple times when saving (Linux). I'd give it a 4/10. If it would be more stable, had no dead ends and the lantern wouldn't be where it is, it would probably get a 7/10. The way it is now, it's just not really fun without a walk-through.

A strange, liminal yet artistic game

The game has you clicking to walk forward or turn, moving through different time periods and locations, solving puzzles, navigating mazes; all while feeling rather uncomfortable. Everything feels "liminal" - like The Backrooms - as it's semi-realistic pre-rendered 3D locations. And it's rather the point that you feel uncomfortable. Everything is disjointed because the labyrinth builder has purposely put disparate locations and time periods together. It's unsettling - purposely. There are no jumpscares or traditional horror elements. This is a puzzle adventure with a sense of the alien about it. An extremely unusual experience that may mildly creep you out by how "liminal" it feels. But it's a decent game for the genre in the 1990s, and it'll take you a while (or even a long time) to solve. I would suggest saving a lot and DON'T overwrite your saves, there aren't many places where you can softlock but it is possible. I will say: Don't use your 25c coin the first place you see.

thanks Gog for adding this game

Been wanting to play this again played it a long time ago one minor complaint from the original version is it was played completely from the cd and it was a case you had to reboot your computer first to start it. Thankfully though I'm sure that's not a problem with this new version. One other minor quibble is mazes aplenty most annoying was the surreal maze as you can't map it out like the rest. At least they give you an automap for the other mazes.
