My name is Lemeza Kosugi and when I am not busy teaching archeology, I seek out undiscovered ruins and their secrets. Not too long ago, a note arrived from my long-lost father, exclaiming “Eventually, I found it. I’ve won!”. Seems like the old man finally did it: he found La-Mulana, the ancient temple that holds the ancient knowledge hidden from mankind for all these years. With my trusty laptop and my whip, I have set out to plumb the depths of this ancient temple to see what treasures I can find...

La-Mulana is an “Archaeological Ruin Exploration Action Game” in the vein of classic MSX platformers. Great hardcore puzzle platformer

Good points: The design of the levels. The way every field is connected to the others, especially to the ones in the back is remarkable. The amount of puzzles. While some of them are simple, others are very original, especially the ones that can be found during the last part of the game (More on this later). Variety of enemies and things to discover. For players who like to unlock all the secrets. Not so good points: The controls are not as good as they should be. Some boss fights are difficult only because of them. The experience would be much better if the game had better ones. The collision detection and hit boxes are a bit off sometimes, mainly with the bosses. The clues. Many of them are helpful, but others are very difficult to understand or are in a completely unrelated part of the maze so you have no idea of what they mean. The way the game shows something has been unlocked is not very good. Sometimes you solve a puzzle and it is easy to find what has been unlocked, but a few times during the game you have absolutely no idea of what has changed. So the only two options are revisiting every place to check it (and with the size of the dungeon, it is neither fun nor practical), or looking it up in a guide. Mark: 8/10. It is truly a good game, but it would be great if some details were fixed. Let’s hope they are in the upcoming La-Mulana 2. I’d recommend this game only to hardcore players who like platforming and puzzles. Casual gamers, stay away from this game.

Several months of puzzles

La-mulana is an archaeology ruin exploration action game with a heavy focus on puzzles. The game has some combat and boss fights to it, but the core of it is finding clues to riddles and then solving them. The game is extremely hard, not because of the combat, platforming or bosses, but because these puzzles can take you anywhere between hours to weeks to solve. The game tests your skills at observing clues in the world, tablets, background art, or perhaps something in the maps, and then connecting to that to something you read earlier in another part of the game. The longer in the game go, the more challenging the puzzles go. It's likely you won't finish this game on your first try and have to restart after a break to get a fresh look at the puzzles. I personally finished the game on my 3rd try after a total of 10 months of playing, with some breaks in the middle. The game controls are pretty lacking and the movement is awkward. The beginning can be pretty slow and features some amounts of annoying grinding. The music is incredible and the graphics are amazing. Play this game if you enjoy spending a very long time solving challenging puzzles that feature bits of action-y archaeology to it. Using a walkthrough is not recommended as without the puzzles La-mulana quickly becomes a rather average title. Also note that this is a remake - the original game was released in 2005 and continues to be free. There are some differences between this and the original, but for most of it, the remake is an improvement.

Built to be rough

First of all, for anyone who deems themselves to be a casual gamer, odds are this isn't for you. This is a Metroidvania that I personally feel takes many bad and good elements from bother Metroid, and Castlevania. Some of this was deliberate because the creators of the game felt most games weren't hard enough - so this game was literally built to kick you in the gnads whenever it was given the chance. If you don't mind a little pain, go on, enjoy... But if you get easily frustrated, don't even think about it. To put it simply, if you fall into the wrong pit, walk down the wrong path, or die; there is no checkpoint. Back to the title with you, if you didn't save it's a whole new save file! Some tips: F1 pauses and opens any map if you have the exe for it. Gold and weights can be collected, weights can be bought. Saving is done at certain ornate stones (one is located on the starting screen) by pressing the DOWN key. Buy the translation software and scanner right away, read stones by pressing V or any key assigned to "Use Item". Menu is utilized by pressing the ESC key, navigated with the arrow keys, CTRL key, and the TAB key. GOOD LUCK!

Alert! Game-braking bugs!

Game starts well enough. First hour was relatively enjoyable allthough the controlls are really stiff. It takes half a second before you can move in either direction after jumping, can't jump from ladders, obstacles that are ceilings and walls that do not look like walls... Most of the time enemies drop green orbs but they do nothing until suddenly and seemingly randomy (perhaps once in 50 times) it fills up full health. Go figure... Somehow I ended up in the solar temple and manged to save but now there is no way out. None of the enemies drop any weights and I need 2 to make it out. I have already had enough and it has not even been 2 hours. I cannot even begin to describe how dissapointed I am in what initially looked like a promising metroidvania experience. If the solar temple map is ever fixed I might give it another try but until then stay away from this game.

My First review (and for good reason)

I've discovered plenty of great games through GOG, but man, oh man, does La Mulana take the cake. I've yet to complete it, but what I can say is this.. CRAZY difficult, CRAZY fun. I don't think much more needs to be said, honestly, other than, BUY THIS GAME NOW!!! Castlevania SOTN and Metroid fans, dig in! you won't be disappointed!
