Decent but let down by its own design.

I have played 85+ hours. The game has the potential to be fun but becomes frustrating as you realize that its current mechanics are designed to waste the player's time. This is particularly eggregious when you play the game from singular provinces instead of the kingdom default modes. Every building purchased somehow increases the next building's cost. Each city used to have an 8 building cap until it was recently patched out after many player led discussions complained about it. The AI will find ways to gank a player run through either war declarations or other ways to extort money and resources from the player when they most need it, plus did I mention the ridiculously inflating building prices? It just seems that everything is expensive for no reason than to retard gameplay, this is not fun at all. For some reason the game also hard limits you to 8 council members including your monarch with no other hierarchies to manage kingdom's past a certain size, I do not understand why it has to be this way when a system of delegation would suit such scaling sizes I could go on but until the devs literally revamp the game's mechanics it will remain obscure as an entry with only history buffs liking it for accuracy, other players like myself will probably move on to the next total war title if not already playing crusader kings. So yeah, KoH2 is a decent title that has the potential for greatness but only if the game devs allow it to flourish.

Just buy the first one.

I bought and played the first game here on gog, and its great, this sequel is not. They have destroyed everything they got right with the first, and made no improvements on what they got wrong. Its biggest problem is balancing. It plays like a pay to win mobile app, everything is so painfully slow and unbalanced. Trade no longer works because you can only trade with provinces close by, and you need commerce points no, so the start game is painfully slow and boring. You now get only 4 building slots before having to pay huge prices to activate additional slots. Marriage is useless because every time your king dies they lay claim and their kingdom declares war for not giving them half you provinces. Spy stuff is useless because you can never afford to do any of the actions. Skill upgrades are random, so you can specialise your knights. Don't let the graphics fool you. Save your money and get the first one.

I really want to like this.

It's got a great starting point with bits of other games mashed together. I like what the dev team is trying to do, I just do not think this is ready, yet. After playing over ten hours and trying multiple times to enjoy a campaign, something happens that isn't explained well, if at all. The game declares war with several of my neighbors suddenly joining against me. Why? Who knows. Did I cause it or did something happen in the world that I wasn't aware of? The UI doesn't explain what happened. I feel like the devs can fix this stuff, and I will be cheering them on to do so because there's a good start to a historical strategy game hidden here, I think. I wish this was in Early Access and I will update my review if the devs solve the many issues.

Not what I was hoping for

I expected this game to improve and build upon the first game of the sequel. The only upgrade is the visuals and audio - you get a nice 3D view of your kingdom with some good music. Unfortunately those are the only upgrades, everything else feels like a downgrade, including the amount of fun you get from the game. Regarding UI, gameplay, etc you can read more realistic reviews on Steam. The only reason I give 3 stars is because I really liked the first Knights of Honor.

Excellent Game

It's a very nice strategy game. It's not as crazy complicated as most paradox games, but it has enough systems and points you can min-max if you want to go in deep with micro and optimazation. It has the option to fight battles like Total War, although it's not as fleshed out or good as total war. The option feels like something players would do if they have tiny kingdoms, or want to win a battle that would otherwise be hard or impossible to win. All in all you would probably not be using this option later on in the game, as the scope of your army and battles make it really tedious. The game focus isn't solely on battles like Total war, neither is on relations like Crusader Kings. It has people in it (knights) that act as an adviser or general. For example if you want to make an army and fight you need a Marshal. If you want to make money you need a trader, if you want to convert or change culture you need a priest etc. Diplomacy exists, although it's not very complicated. The main goal of the game is either victory through score or world conquest. All in all the game has a little bit of everything, but doesn't excel in anything in specific. It is a good step between a simple strategy game and a paradox game. It's fun, has a lot of replayability even if you pick the same nation due to the way resources are randomized, and both small and big nations have different but interesting gameplay. If you played the previous game and like it, you would probably like this one as well. It has the same feel with a bit more complexity than the previous one. It might feel like Knights of Honor 1,5 than Knights of Honor 2 if you wanted more from the sequel though.
