Description
As a thug beaten to the brink of death you have started your mission of revenge. You want to bury those bastards six feet under for what they have done to you, but to do so you need to start your own gang and recruit right from the streets. If a new gang member turns out to be a punk, blast him, and make room for new ones. Move up in the world, but watch out for the Kingpin, eventually you're going to have to take him on.

Somewhere in the past that never crossed paths with the future lies the world of the Kingpin. Burned out buildings and urban decay are the landscape. Local gangs roam the streets, protecting their turf and scooping out opportunities.

Recruit a gang of thugs and rule the streets, snuff out rivals with a single head-shot and watch them bleed to death. Or put them on fire and watch them suffer. You will deliver an extremely brutal and violent death to those who messed you up. Kill everyone who stands in your way and become new Kingpin - crime lord of every thief, murderer and dirty thug in the city.
  • Bloody, brutal, swearing-heavy combat - one of the first truly adult-oriented games
  • Impressive graphics and AI for its time
  • An Original Soundtrack by Cypress Hill

It's Okay

I really don't see what the hype behind this game, even for the time. It's gory and that's nice, but it being mostly about finesse and subtlety seems to be more of an exaggeration based on the first few levels, which were where I enjoyed the game most. Shooting the crap out of everyone is actually incredibly difficult, given that once you get a starting pistol, everyone else whips out two with double the fire rate. Many aspects of the game are buggy and somewhat glitchy, the story is decent, but the real issue is how inconsistent the level design can get. It's more that once the game gets going it starts to shift away from thinking your way in and out of situations, and saving your money to shooting everything that moves with a gun just because you have to, which would be fine but many of the weapons feel as impactful as the shotgun from the original quake. To give the game credit, the AI Is rather smart, and knows how to take cover, but it rather quickly (and I mean 2-4 levels) devolves into heavier weaponry like rocket and grenade launchers, which seems a little out of place. If I had to pin this on anything it feels more like an ambitious quake mod. If you're down for that, be my guest. If you're not, go elsewhere.

Life of Criminal

Kingpin is an unconventional FPS that is uncompromising towards today's players and doesn't hesitate to punish them for every mistake. The player finds himself in the shoes of a brawler who embarks on a journey of revenge against the main Kingpin. The game runs on the IdTech2 engine, which doesn't impress modern gamers much these days, but it's not downright repulsive either, especially with the downloadable HD textures. It is an FPS that offers more open and elaborate levels, including vertical ones. The dirtiness and atmosphere of the streets is amazing. Gameplay-wise, it doesn't dwell too much on explanation - it's preferable to interact with NPCs, search the bodies of killed enemies, and pay attention to small details for the purposes of moving forward. The game also offers a decent arsenal of weaponry, from a pipe to a rocket launcher. Overall, for me, this is one of the legendary FPS that wasn't afraid to take risks and bring something new to the genre. Recommending: MH Kingpin patch, HD textures AI upscaled

just play the demo

I've always been fond of this game because the demo was so perfect: it throws you into the life of a petty street criminal bent on revenge, has some minor RPG elements in the form of a store and money, and a lot of swearing. It's 2 hours of gameplay, and you get just enough of it to be like "hot damn, I wonder how this develops." It took me 25 years to follow up on it, and... wow. Never meet your heroes. Here's what I like from the entire rest of the game: I really thought I'd have something to put here. Ok ok, there are a lot of moments where I could see what they were going for, with level design that was supposed to depict decrepit urban spaces, an FPS-action take on rpg mechanics, a gritty story about a bunch of meaty thugs, but none of that stuff gets developed. The levels end up being labyrinthine in their layout and sameness, and claustrophobic in a way that makes walking down a hallway frustrating. Definitely playable (as opposed to SiN, which has levels that are borderline unplayable for how annoying they are), and some areas are visually compelling, but my overall response was "ugh, more?" The RPG stuff with quests and the economy are undercooked, and feel kind of tacked on. They involve some vaguely alternate routes to goals, where you can choose between stealth and gungho action, but the once you aggro one AI, the rest will swarm anyways. So it's really a choice between gungho action now or later. By the middle, it drops all pretense of being anything but a flat-out shooter and just plows on ahead into mayhem. Which is fine, but it's also the least interesting part of the game's design. There are 3 good guns in the arsenal, and switching between them is more about ammo economy & range than anything else. The story ends up being 8 hours of "I still really want revenge." No real characters or stories beyond that. Just a more cleverly disguised version of needing a blue keycard, where the keycard is a car part that someone else turns into a keycard.

Coop mode

The developers tore out the native coop mode that all Quake2 engine games had built-in (probably due to rushing for deadline) but a friend and I wrote a mod to add it back in. http://downloads.kingpinforever.com/mods/Co-op_Mod/ The one we wrote is in the "Old_Coop_Mod" subdirectory there (ours was done in 2002) - somebody has apparently revamped it a bit and upped the player limit from 4 to 9. (And removed friendly fire? Huh. Well, I guess some people like that.) But our version came with Linux binaries and source as well and the new one doesn't do Linux - nor the source code to show his changes... :(
