Game:

You're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Thrust into a raging civil war, you watch helplessly as invaders storm your village and slaughter your friends and family. Narrowly escaping the brutal attack, you grab your sword to fight back. Avenge the death of your parents and help repel the invading forces!

Story:

Bohemia – located in the heart of Europe, the region is rich in culture, silver, and sprawling castles. The death of its beloved ruler, Emperor Charles IV, has plunged the kingdom into dark times: war, corruption, and discord are tearing this jewel of the Holy Roman Empire apart. One of Charles' sons, Wenceslas, has inherited the crown. Unlike his father, Wenceslas is a naive, self-indulgent, unambitious monarch. His half-brother and King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox, senses weakness in Wenceslas. Feigning good will, Sigismund travels to Bohemia and kidnaps his half-brother. With no king on the throne, Sigismund is now free to plunder Bohemia and seize its riches.

In the midst of this chaos, you're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Your peaceful life is shattered when a mercenary raid, ordered by King Sigismund himself, burns your village to the ground. By bittersweet fortune, you are one of the few survivors of this massacre.

Without a home, family, or future you end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is forming a resistance against the invasion. Fate drags you into this bloody conflict and shoves you into a raging civil war, where you help fight for the future of Bohemia.
  • Massive realistic open world: Majestic castles, vast fields, all rendered in stunning high-end graphics.
  • Non-linear story: Solve quests in multiple ways, then face the consequences of your decisions.
  • Challenging combat: Distance, stealth, or melee. Choose your weapons and execute dozens of unique combos in battles that are as thrilling as they are merciless.
  • Character development: Improve your skills, earn new perks, and forge and upgrade your equipment.
  • Dynamic world: Your actions influence the reactions of the people around you. Fight, steal, seduce, threaten, persuade, or bribe. It’s all up to you.
  • Historical accuracy: Meet real historical characters and experience the genuine look and feel of medieval Bohemia.

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!

After seeing a preview of this game 2 years ago, I knew I had to buy it when it was released. I've not been able to stop playing it since it came out- this game is literally keeping me up at night! One of the best aspects of the game is the combat. Unlike many other games, the fighting has a much more 'real time' base to it. Rather than a 'slash and you're dead' system, this games makes you take the time to learn all the necessary fighting skills, including sword, unarmed, mace and others. You also need to learn other skills, such as riding, hunting/archery, lockpicking etc. The lore and feel of the game is incredible. Because the game is set according to actual history, the different time brings a somewhat calmer, yet also tense feeling to the story. Having a glimpse into the way we used to live and conduct ourselves is very interesting, and every item is genuine of the time. I love being able to explore the beautiful scenery, being able to hunt and play through a variety of quests. Graphically, this game is stunning and the soundtrack is beautiful. The armour set from the pre-order DLC is the best in the game, and is so much fun to find! The game centres on a young man named Henry, who watches his parents get viciously murdered and his town razed. Hellbent on revenge, the story begins- and what a story it is! Gripping, intriguing and suspenseful, it sucks you in from the first minute. From there, you have the ability to fashion Henry to your liking- create a knight, a criminal, a monk... the choice is up to you to decide on his strengths and weaknesses. Do you want him to have brute strength and agility or be a charismatic smooth talker? The choice is up to you. As with any new game, there are more bugs than an ant colony, but if you can overlook these and wait for patches, then you are in for a brilliant ride. Well worth every dollar spent and every sleepless night!

Beautiful game

Great game. It surely is an rpg. The combat system is a bit hard to get used to but it is a nice change coming from playing fallout and elder scrolls. Beautiful world, add reshade framework and its even better. Good on GOG for bringing such a game.

Flawed but moddable open world

KCD is a flawed gem which likes to punish the player for its own flaws. However, it is moddable and thus salvagable. Graphics are also stunning and characters well written. However without mods it would be very hard to optimize graphics as the settings are too general. Without mods this game would be 2 stars due to its severe and many irritations. With mods it jumps to 4 since you can easily fix most of them. Please learn from this entry guys. Now that Bethesda has fallen into the all consuming darkness of online microtransactions, we need someone to step up and make good moddable 1st person single-player western rpgs. I think you can be this developer and I'm going with the four star rating in the hopes that you keep improving, keep your games moddable and devoid of sleezy cashgrabs.

Could be good when it's stable for mods.

Decent game so far, with horrible design decisions around saving, knowing what mechanics will do exactly, and just in general. I do not know why I am wanted after flawlessly robbing a business at night with no witnesses, or that I will have to slow walk home with my loot because fast travel is disabled when encumbered. Walked to the side of the town you are supposed to go to? Sorry we put an impassable pile of sticks there. The terrain is slightly rocky? You have to jump in order to walk. The save system was a bad idea to inconvenience people that want to reload and play a perfect game, but let people make their own decisions, not this crap. Most of these problems are solved by mods, but the updates to the game make the mods necessary to having a fun time stop working. Also they said this game would be as accurate as possible for a game, but it has a lot of glaring historical inaccuracies, less than most, but due to their claim it is a bit disappointing, especially when they effect gameplay negatively on top of immersion.

Immersion, History and Good Characters

For info I playing it with 4 small mods. Played on: Normal (first game) Context and History: this game is heavily grounded into real history and this way isn't contended to PC/SJW Culture. The admirable part is the Codex that gives context and small History lessons about the medieval society and geopolitics of the area the game is. In the game itself, the transposition of a believable/real settings certainly heps to immerse even more into history. I passed a few time to observe castles and dwellings, a bit like a virtually living museum. The work put in this is pretty admirable. Of course there are (very) few gamey stuff like some healing potions, but the gameplay is unforgivable if you play silly (like jumping from an height) and indeed it is pretty far from the fantasy of Skyrim or Oblivion. Combat: at first I had a hard time to grasp the combat and played it as ... in Skyrim. A dreadful error even if I managed to kill enemies. But, the in-game combat tutorial when you are at Rattay was like a "Oh Yeah!" / "That was it!" moment, cuddos to the work done in this department. It is like you, as a player, evolving in same time as your character. Of course it is better that you don't act like a braindead when it is time to engage someone or a group, such system really requires some tactics, heroism doesn't brings you a long life... Other Gameplay: it was the same experience for Lockpicking. Excepted that the in-game tutorial wasn't clear to me, I had to find a youtube video to finally understand it. The system is simple but painful when you are at level 0 and until you meet the miller that will train you in this way. The rest is pretty nice and immersive, haggling is always fun and stay optional. Bugs: OK I playing the last version of the moment; 1.7.1. Frankly during the whole run I haven't encountered any crash, nor strange physics bugs or textures. The only very few glitches (2 or 3 after 15hrs) I seen are for shadows by certain angle and in a very few places.
