Game:

You're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Thrust into a raging civil war, you watch helplessly as invaders storm your village and slaughter your friends and family. Narrowly escaping the brutal attack, you grab your sword to fight back. Avenge the death of your parents and help repel the invading forces!

Story:

Bohemia – located in the heart of Europe, the region is rich in culture, silver, and sprawling castles. The death of its beloved ruler, Emperor Charles IV, has plunged the kingdom into dark times: war, corruption, and discord are tearing this jewel of the Holy Roman Empire apart. One of Charles' sons, Wenceslas, has inherited the crown. Unlike his father, Wenceslas is a naive, self-indulgent, unambitious monarch. His half-brother and King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox, senses weakness in Wenceslas. Feigning good will, Sigismund travels to Bohemia and kidnaps his half-brother. With no king on the throne, Sigismund is now free to plunder Bohemia and seize its riches.

In the midst of this chaos, you're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Your peaceful life is shattered when a mercenary raid, ordered by King Sigismund himself, burns your village to the ground. By bittersweet fortune, you are one of the few survivors of this massacre.

Without a home, family, or future you end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is forming a resistance against the invasion. Fate drags you into this bloody conflict and shoves you into a raging civil war, where you help fight for the future of Bohemia.
  • Massive realistic open world: Majestic castles, vast fields, all rendered in stunning high-end graphics.
  • Non-linear story: Solve quests in multiple ways, then face the consequences of your decisions.
  • Challenging combat: Distance, stealth, or melee. Choose your weapons and execute dozens of unique combos in battles that are as thrilling as they are merciless.
  • Character development: Improve your skills, earn new perks, and forge and upgrade your equipment.
  • Dynamic world: Your actions influence the reactions of the people around you. Fight, steal, seduce, threaten, persuade, or bribe. It’s all up to you.
  • Historical accuracy: Meet real historical characters and experience the genuine look and feel of medieval Bohemia.

Just a great game...

I can't say I've seen a lot of bugs (as others have mentioned) having played a patched up version, but there are some crazy ones still! Sometimes in this game things go hilariously wrong or just work unrealistically. That said, this is one of the best games I've ever played. It really is like escaping into a different world, with a brilliantly written story, moving soundtrack and stunning visuals. It's just a totally unique experience. The weird glitches really do take you out of that world, but that's mainly because everything else is so engrossing. Buy it - you'll have a great time.

Amazing game, poorly optimized.

the best rpg type game i have ever played. the optimization is terribleand with my slightly above average pc (well over reccomended specs) i hit frame drops consistantly in big cities or battles. if they could fix this ONLY downside then 5/5. i think this is the best game out there today that fits my taste.

Excellent game but very buggy

When I started playing KC:D, it certainly met my expectations for game concept and game play. Like many other history enthusiasts who also like RPGs, this game felt like a dream come true for me. It strikes a good balance between historical authenticity even in small details (e.g. no potatoes) and truly fun gameplay (e.g. historically inaccurate but gorgeous forests). The combat definitely isn't my favorite part, but it's decent and I know I merely suck at it. More than that, though, this is the first game in years where I've had fun just talking to NPCs and doing the mini games (mostly; lockpicking is less fun). Mod support is great, too. However, I do have a fair warning to everyone who doesn't have many free nights to give to this game besides playing it. It is very buggy in very serious ways. The reason I chose to review this at all (this is the first review I've ever written on GoG) is because the game can very easily break itself. Several times now, I've had to go back to save games that I've kept for just this purpose on the recommendation of the community because of corrupted saves. Save games in KC:D, simply put, are fragile. Especially combined with the save game method of requiring a certain potion or sleeping, it's an enormous problem. Rescuing your campaign is possible if you back up your save files (many people don't do that sort of thing), but it can be time consuming. I believe in the concept of this game very strongly, and I want people to show support by purchasing this game. However, there is a "buyer beware" aspect of it that is very off-putting for me. My current plan after investing a little over 30 hours into the game is to step away from it, wait for my life to get a little less busy, let the devs work on bug fixes, and try it again later. Overall, I think this game is extremely enjoyable and worth the money. However, buyers need to be savvy about their save games and willing to invest troubleshooting time into it at the moment.

Ambitious and unique medieval experience

That game is not for everyone, but if you find it suitable for you, you'll be very pleased. Game is unique take on cRPG. By unique I mean there are no dragons, no magic (sort of is, but more of alchemy and witchcraft). It's feels more like immersive take on medieval live experience. You start as peasant Henry, son of blacksmith from Skalice, bohemian village. Whole story takes plays in Jan Hus times in Bohemia, there is a lot of historical stuff about that particluar period in time, so if you are even mildly interestedy about history of Europe, there's plenty of fun facts to read about. Games' attempt is to give you a glimpse on life in medieval times, so you can do a variety of activities, fist fights, dice gambling, horse riding, sword fighting and archery. Of course there are lots of quests, that really cool and interesting in their design, however can be annoying and often times you will fail them for different reasons. This is great change compared to other games. I did not experience that many bugs as people say, I started playing version 1.7.1 and so far I had no crashes, and glitches are insignificant for me when they occur from time to time. Graphics aren't as great as other modern games but enviroment can be quite pretty some time. I really enjoyed just riding through the woods and admiring streams and trees around with dears or rabbits running around. Game also seems to be rather poorly optimized, however from what I know creators are small Czech studio so I can forgive it for generl innovation it brings to gaming. To sum it up: + great quests design + unique and enjoyable fight and archery system (at least for me) + detailed and immersive anviroment + a lot of historical information and real research that earn extra points if like history a bit - mediocre visuals - not so greatly optimized - poor facial features compared to other games, for example Witcher 3 - save system can be annoying I hope they will be sucessful and maybe we can have follow up.
