Game:

You're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Thrust into a raging civil war, you watch helplessly as invaders storm your village and slaughter your friends and family. Narrowly escaping the brutal attack, you grab your sword to fight back. Avenge the death of your parents and help repel the invading forces!

Story:

Bohemia – located in the heart of Europe, the region is rich in culture, silver, and sprawling castles. The death of its beloved ruler, Emperor Charles IV, has plunged the kingdom into dark times: war, corruption, and discord are tearing this jewel of the Holy Roman Empire apart. One of Charles' sons, Wenceslas, has inherited the crown. Unlike his father, Wenceslas is a naive, self-indulgent, unambitious monarch. His half-brother and King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox, senses weakness in Wenceslas. Feigning good will, Sigismund travels to Bohemia and kidnaps his half-brother. With no king on the throne, Sigismund is now free to plunder Bohemia and seize its riches.

In the midst of this chaos, you're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Your peaceful life is shattered when a mercenary raid, ordered by King Sigismund himself, burns your village to the ground. By bittersweet fortune, you are one of the few survivors of this massacre.

Without a home, family, or future you end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is forming a resistance against the invasion. Fate drags you into this bloody conflict and shoves you into a raging civil war, where you help fight for the future of Bohemia.
  • Massive realistic open world: Majestic castles, vast fields, all rendered in stunning high-end graphics.
  • Non-linear story: Solve quests in multiple ways, then face the consequences of your decisions.
  • Challenging combat: Distance, stealth, or melee. Choose your weapons and execute dozens of unique combos in battles that are as thrilling as they are merciless.
  • Character development: Improve your skills, earn new perks, and forge and upgrade your equipment.
  • Dynamic world: Your actions influence the reactions of the people around you. Fight, steal, seduce, threaten, persuade, or bribe. It’s all up to you.
  • Historical accuracy: Meet real historical characters and experience the genuine look and feel of medieval Bohemia.

Great RPG, an unpolished GEM

For the record I bought the game late june, so it was patched, and I did not experience any really troublesome or gamebreaking bugs so far. I would say this is a little gem, not quite polished but you get my drift. The game lacks some finition, probably because it was very ambitious for a small team. Although we have to give to warhorse they put quite something together. The historical immersion is no match to anything I have played before. The mixture of creating a character and making his history fit in History is a great idea, and is done really well here. I honnestly cannot wait to see what warhorse will pull in the future. If they make another historical rpg, without the youth issues of KCD, it could be a masterpiece. The historical accuracy mixed with our fictional story allows quite a strong immersion. We feel like we are Henry, and like we live in medieval Bohemia. That feeling is the essence of any self respecting RPG. So, just for this, kudos warhorse, you gave us a real role playing experience. Next of the numbness of most mainstream titles, that definitely deserves some praise. The game is pretty well designed on an experience standpoint. You can find RPG elements, with perks and character customisation. All of which illustrated by coherent art. I frankly appreciate that touch (there even is an alcohol related skill tree !). The game is also full of historical informations that will appeal to our inner knight dreaming 7 yo selves. The main story is coherent, convincing, and the related quests are interesting. Some sidequests are also quite the experience (I am thinking of the monastery investigation when writing this). The language, despite using modern pronunciation and vocabulary, participates well to the immersion, through the retranscription of these times' mindsets : exemple, the pious greetings. Combat system gives us a nice feel of actual swordfighting, with the directions, parade /dodge timings, importance of space, and also (quite historical for that one), stamina management. All of which without being too much of a challenge, so we can be forgiven for our newb mistakes, and grow in the environment. So far, we basically have great immersion, well designed rpg-ness, a tasteful combat system, some interesting quests, that is pretty much 80% of the job done for a good RPG. That being said, the title is severly lacking on some points, most importantly, optimisation. On a quite decent configuration, I get as low as 20fps (even less while galloping on my horse) in town (i5 skylake + gtx1070 +16gb RAM). Then, it is a bit buggy. I experienced a few bugs that had me restart the game (graphical only for me => black screen, horse is a black square, etc...). I did not experience gamebreaking bugs so far though. But, gamers be warned, if you expected your purchases to be polished and perfectly finished, this is not the title for you. Now if you crave an intriguing, gut grabbing RPG experience, you will find in your heart to forgive warhorse for the technical issues that are so far, the only shadowy spots on an otherwise very well thought RPG.

Awesome game

I'm about 90 hours in and it's amazing. The world is absolutly beautiful and most quests are very well made. There are some minor bugs left (sometimes you manage to get stuck somewhere, but if you have a saviour potion with you, you can save the game, reload and you're unstuck) but nothing that would stand out or affect the gameplay. 10/10 can recommend!

A breath of fresh air

I just finished my playthrough, and let me tell ya, what a ride it was! I rarelly bother writing a review, unless game really impressed me. So, whats so special about it? Basically everything. It's fresh, it's new, and it aproaches RPG from a whole different angle. You have to eat, sleep, clean yourself, maintain your equipments etc (just like in real life). You start of as a peasant who sucks at everything and gradually you get better at things. At first the combat seems clunky, but once you figure how it all works, you cant get enough if it. I hated it in the beggining, and i almost quit the game, because every Tom,Dick, and Jerry would beat me into a pulp everywhere i went. It was very frustrating, but then i dedicated solid 2-3 hours of practicing combat with trainer guy and it finally dawned on me. Once you get it, you'll never want to go back to the usial RPG game combat format. Quests are amazing! They are meaninful stories that are a pleasure to complete. Lots of humor, great cutscenes, and just overall immersive experience. Not your typical "go there, kill that, fetch this, because whatever" format. The whole game tries to be as realistic and historically accurate as possible, i learned quite a bit of history while playing this game and it was fun. But the main advantage of this game is it's compltetly fresh and unorthodox experience, i've never played anything like that before and was great. This game is amazing, and must have for any RPG fan worth his/her salt. I am greatful to creators of this game for all the great times i had playing it.

Great open world RPG

This ranks right up there with Skyrim for me. I love open world medieval RPGs and KCD fits the bill nicely. Sure, there aren't dragons or other fantasy creatures, but it definitely let's you get lost in a more realistic historical setting. I highly recommend it.

Shines through the bugs

Yes this game is full of bugs and I'm sure if you were ever considering this game you've heard of the bugs. Some are more detrimental than others and some never encounter terrible bugs. In my experience I have had only a couple of bugged side quest and no bugged main quest. Other bugs have been minor like texture pop ins, graphical glitches, and broken stairs. I point out these bug though for a reason, even though these bugs exist the innovation and beauty of the game shine through. The combat is fun and refreshing (gets easier as you practice), the landscape is gorgeous, the lack of overtop crazy fantasy just feels so right and perfect. The dialogue is outstanding and well written and Henry's progression through this world is perfectly paced and the emotion portayed by Henry and supporting characters are spot on. The realism is so accurate it's easy to get immersed in this world and often I find myself simply going out to hunt and experience the world and it's secrets. I haven't been this excited to explore a world since oblivion and there is so much to do. Once the next patch hits and adresses the bugged quest this will easily be a 5 star game.
