Description
At twilight in Kentucky, as bird songs give way to the choir of frogs and insects, familiar roads become strange, and it's easy to get lost. Those who are already lost may find their way to a secret highway winding through underground caves. The people who live and work along this highway are themselves a little strange at first, but soon seem familiar: the aging driver making the last delivery for a doomed antique shop; the young woman who fixes obsolete TVs surrounded by ghosts; the child and his giant eagle companion; the robot musicians; the invisible power company lurking everywhere, and the threadbare communities who struggle against its grip.

KENTUCKY ROUTE ZERO is a magical realist adventure game in five acts, featuring a haunting electronic score, and a suite of hymns and bluegrass standards recorded by The Bedquilt Ramblers. Rendered in a striking visual style that draws as much from theater, film, and experimental electronic art as it does from the history of videogames, this is a story of unpayable debts, abandoned futures, and the human drive to find community.

Originally published episodically over a span of years, the game now includes all five acts along with the "interludes," which were originally published separately. It has also been painstakingly localized for French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Spanish (both European Spanish and Latin American).

Linux gamers beware

In spite of its awesome quality up to its breaking, the Linux version of the game does not work. There is a general bug at Act II, Scene V among basically all distributions. (See https://steamcommunity.com/app/231200/discussions/0/1751276551821695361/ and count me in…) Linux gamers -- beware of this scam! You are not getting what you paid for.

A nice art project

Simply put, this game tries to be cohesive but it falls short where it matters the most, the dialogue & story. It builds atmosphere well, and has interesting visuals. It is essentially a nice art project, a 2d walking simulator. The dialogue+story is scatter brained because it tries to have a choice in dialogue and minor branches in the narrative but ends up appearing disjointed, which really breaks immersion. The worst part is the ending, which is really underwhelming, banal and almost abrupt.

A gem hidden in plain sight

Every so often, a games comes around that completely shatters what we have come to expect in terms of what a videogame is supposed to be. Kentucky Route Zero is one such game, and I emplore you to sit down and play it. In the fear of spoilers, I will break down the basic concept of the game. You play as Conway, a man who drives a delivery truck for an antique shop. Accompanying his is an old dog with a straw hat. The game is played with your mouse entirely, as you point, click, and make choices while exploring the entoxicating and enchanting world of well, Kentucky. What this games lacks in triple A graphics, it more than makes up for in terms of atmosphere, soundtrack and well written characters. You are not simply a bystander to the evolving story, you are directly influencing it, writing it, bending it to your own taste. In a way, you are the storyteller, and it enforces that feeling greatly throughout the whole experience. If I have in the least peeked your interest in this game, do yourself a favor, buy it, sit down and get ready for a game that makes you think, laugh, cry and wonder. Kentucky Route Zero is well worth your time and will keep your brain occupied for the longest of times after you've put it down. Now we just need Act V

Not my cup of tea

I use to enjoy point and click games, but I really don't understand this one. It has no meaning, dialogs are pure nonsense and I couldn't find a reason to continue my journey in this adventure. I feel really disappointed.

Gorgeous

What a gorgeous game. I've never really seen anything like it before. I'm still on Act 1, Scene 3 but so far I'm speechless. It's so beautiful and weird.
